Whatever happened to "the best stadium in the world"?

Going by what RS4 has said the improved design by AFL is as good a stadium minus 200 million worth of aestetic steel cladding. Is "the best stadium in the world" not created by "the best fans in the world"?

OK, I was talking to my architect mate again last night and apparently AFL are very confident that their revised design will get the nod over the much more expensive HKS stadium. Both firms have been asked for plans and costs and the AFL design is coming in around £200m less than HKS.

He says the boardroom at AFL is full of images of their amended plans and he says it looks awesome with a much bigger Kop rising at one end (to accommodate the extra 10,000 fans) and two Wembley-style arches over the stadium. Unfortunately, however, he can't sneak any photos out so you'll have to take his (and my) word for it.

Apparently G & H have already had several meetings with one of AFL's senior partners (I know his name but won't publish it here) and the Manchester firm think they will get the nod.

It is, but speaking objectively you couldn't argue that Anfield is the best stadium in the world.

Whilst I admit the steel price will have catapulted of late, I fail to see how a figures as large as £200m (approx 45-50% of the total cost) could be saved merely by aesthetics. A large part of the steel will be involved in the structure itself.

so this being the third 'new' design is the capacity starting at 60,000 and rising or fixed or whats goin on ??? ****ing yanks. i remember them saying the spade must be in the ground shortly etc

The revised AFL design is for a 70,000 capacity which is 9,000 more than their original plans.

Agreed...

45,000 at Anfield already creates a better atmosphere for big matches than 60,000 at the Emirates or 76,000 at Old Trafford.

I'm not saying that is ALL of the extra £200m construction cost but the steel cladding is a large part of it as I understand.

Personally I'd be gutted if they didn't go with the HSK design. It also means starting the planning process again.

It has to.

Current planning permission is for 60,000 odd seats. Also the height, footprint and general look of the ground is covered by this.

It's like getting permission to build yourself a 2 bedroom bungalow in a field, then actually building a 2 storey house with 4 bedrooms.
