Jane Garvey – Modern Liverpool fan?

Don’t know how many of you listen to Five Live, but in the lead up to the games last night Jane Garvey was talking to the usual ‘experts’ such as Mark Lawrenson et al…If you weren’t aware of where her allegiances lay you’d have said she was a bitter blue or a dirty scummer.

I was pretty furious about her contempt towards Liverpool, our start to the season and in particular Pepe Reina - especially seeing as she is supposedly a Liverpool fan. The other experts were pretty balanced about Reina but Jane went into a rant about him being awful and that he should be sold. Not one mention about last season, she asked why Liverpool have bought awful goalkeepers through the modern era! Even the so called experts were a bit “err well hold on, he and Dudek had fantastic first seasons for example” – is it a BBC policy to be hide your bias in such a way that it seem you hate the club?

She then went into what appeared to be a very bitter rant about Liverpool’s start – saying that Liverpool had been awful and will be eleven points behind the leaders Manchester United come Sunday after just 5 games…anyone notice the problem with this comment? We’ve only played 3 games, 4 come Sunday, and you’d think Manchester United had a home game against Reading or someone…instead of Arsenal.

Is it almost the norm to be negative in the extreme for the modern LFC fan – just look at any Liverpool fan site and you’ll find 10 Jane Garveys belittling the team after just a handful of games, writing them off and slating certain players. Is Jane Garvey just a synopsis of the average Liverpool fan at the moment?
    HOT CANCER.

Good post. I think it's easy to be critical when the expectation is so high, and a journalists job is to provide a view and unbiased one at that. Even if she is a Liverpool supporter, she wouldn't be doing her job is a load of Chavski loving nobbers rang in and accused her of bias. Also, if the rest of the 'experts' are saying one thing, she would just be mixing it up a little with another view. I personally don't care what people say as it's the results which matter. Losing 3-0 to the bitters does hurt, but that's the only result so far this season I'm really bothered about. Hell, Chavski have already lost twice this season and we have our first cup, so who cares.

She's entitles to her opinion just as you and everyone else on this forum is. She's not paid to be a football expert, she is a radio presenter - and as football fans on 5 live, they are encouraged to talk about their teams as fans - not impartial experts. She is not a football journalist.

Peter Allen talks about Spurs in a similarly frank manner. Adrian Chiles (Jane Garvey's other half) always bangs on about West Brom and Croatia.

Why is everyone so wound up about what the media are saying currently? They are paid to attract listeners / viewers / readers etc. It is in their interests to do that, not please you. Get over it.

What I found interesting yesterday listening to it though, was Matt Smith - the new co-presenter, who presenting football with ITV for the last few seasons, turned out to be an avid Red.
        Oh I don't know.

I've just listened to the last nights 606 football talkshow on 5Live and there's some banter in it about the BBC being a pro-LFC organisation - Stubbs is trying to defend the beeb against allegations that it favours LFC.

The Dutch mate I went to the game with last night thought we were pretty poor and couldn't understand why we were so highly rated. Truth is were are much much better than we are performing atm and there is plenty of ammunition for those who want to promote a negative attitude.

Rafa wasnt joking when he said that we may have to wait until after next months internationals before we hit better form. It may be a rocky ride up until xmas.
It's my job to handle life and death situations on a daily basis. It's what I do, and I'm very good at it.

I think that any fans negativity stems from frustration. We have spent almost 2 decades watching the title move between United, Leeds, Blackburn, Arsenal and now it seems to have settled at Chelsea. I grew up in the 70's and 80's. The golden era of Liverpool Football Club and like any true fan I want to get back to them days. Winning a cup every season is a great achievement but it is not the same as being Champions. When we as fans can sense we are close outr expectations get raised and watching games like last Saturday and last night brings you crashing back down to earth with a loud bang.................followed directly by a burst of negativity, arant on the radio or tv or on these forums. I think it shows we care.
            Dare we believe

For god's sake. Jane Garvey is not a sports journalist. It's apparent from listening to her show that she follows football on a pretty casual level. Who knows if she's even watched a match this season. She talks about her children more than she talks about Liverpool. Her line of questioning was just reflecting what was being touted in the newspapers this week giving the likes of Lawro a lead-in to talk about the upcoming matches. Given our 3-nil drubbing at the weekend what would you expect.

I can see where she's coming from, though. After last season, where we were fairly solid to say the least, losing against anyone is unacceptable.

Jane Garvey is an LFC fan but has only a passing interest in the game, like many fans, women in particular, have. I'm not being sexist here. I know many women Reds who are very knowledgable & many male Reds who know sweet FA about he game(they mainly post on KT)

She certainly isn't overly negative about LFC, she just isn't particularly knowledgable.
