i was really talking about our improvement points wise in like for like matches, which is a better indicator of performance improvement imo than how many points we are off the top at this stage

well if thats right it proves my point there a big difference between 26 points in like for like games and 19 points for this stage last season

And strangely 6.5 is only several points off of a typical 7 play... which confirms further proof

I always compare the number of points off the top and I think Rafa does it too. For me, it's a better indicator of how far we're improving. It's how much we're catching up with teams above us the season before.

no it's not, we could have played arse, mancs, chavs away first few games one season and not till the end the next season, you've got to account for difficulty of games too and like for like is the easiest way

                A couple of thoughts:
                1. Averaged out over a season that's 10-11 points.
                2. More difficult teams? The 5 teams we have not yet played are Reading, Man Utd, Man City, West Ham and Middlesbrough - not an above-average mix.

We did play Chelsea and Arsenal at home this year in the first half, but that can be countered by the knowledge that we have improved in the past under Rafa in the second half of the season.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

You're complicating it, IMO. The Bolton team of last year were much better etc ... It's really impossible to compare the way you do. You need to judge by how much we're off the top. Arsenal are setting the standards right now and we're 6 points off it ... The table never lies, even if Man. City were top at that stage, or even Wigan ...

At the top, it's normally very consistent ... i.e you'll roughly see the best teams pulling out near Christmas. Quality wise, the league is quite even in the top 7 or 8, with not so much points separating the top and the 8th team, compared to last season.

We'll I disagree with you and that's just going to have to be the end of it, of course the status of some teams will change, but generally speaking a like for like comparison is better than, the way you're suggesting even if it is open to errors.

i meant to say fixtures rather than teams, if i recall we got a bad deal of it last year, playing everton, chelsea, mancs, arse all away before crimbo. This year it's the other way round bar everton, so it's not a fair representation imo

                        How come ?

If we were top of the table but poorer like for like points wise compared to last season ? The league table reflects the quality of the teams ... at any point in time.

because it doesn't reflect which teams we've played

As with all stats you can't look at any in isolation - all the different analyses give a performance indication which when combined in a multivariate analysis comes out as: we're doin alright...

                                Results.doc

This is a comparison of all teams against the same games last season. It only shows the number of points up or down and a projected total points if all other results matched last seasons.

Man City are the biggest gainers so far.....
