BBC in Hillsborough apology. . again

BBC in Hillsborough apology. . again
Dec 6 2007 by Greg O'Keeffe, Liverpool Echo

THE BBC apologised today after one of its reporters implied ticketless Liverpool supporters caused the deaths of 96 fans during the Hillsborough disaster.

Journalist Patrick Burns made the controversial comment during a feature on the Politics Show last Sunday about football ground terracing.

It comes after the corporation was criticised last month when a scene in EastEnders linked hooligans with Hillsborough.

During the Politics Show, Mr Burns said that, “four years after Heysel” ...“Caged in at Hillsborough, 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death after a late influx of ticketless supporters behind them.”

Today, the BBC insisted that the remark was not intended to cause offence or hurt.

A spokesman said: “The report did not mean to imply that the cause of the disaster was fans arriving at the ground without tickets.

“The BBC would like to apologise if the remark could have been misconstrued or caused offence.”

Reds fan Nigel Kavannah, from Halewood, said it is not the first time the BBC has angered fellow supporters with speculation on the cause of the disaster.

He said: “This has been apparent several times this year. There was the appearance of Kelvin MacKenzie on Question Time which led to the truth day protest in January.

“Then we have had one of the characters in Eastenders linking Hillsborough to hooliganism.

“And now we’ve got this with the Politics Show and Patrick Burns. It just feels all very lazy and shoddy by the BBC. The Taylor report, which explains what happened during the disaster, is there on the internet for everyone to read.”

Its the BBC it's not that they wont learn the fact is they don't care. The corporation is run on a poll tax, we have to pay for the crap they produce regardless. those lucky enough to be employed get a job for life and their days of impartiality are now long gone.

so slack of them, 3 times in a year they've had to apologies for their conduct.
once could be construed as a mistake, twice careless, but third time?

I'm not actually that annoyed at the BBC - if anything it shows the lasting impact of a certain newspaper's headlines and the continued lack of knowledge of the Taylor report outside of Liverpool.

I have mates who are still ignorant to it all.

It just illustrates why the JFT96 campaign is such a just cause.
The families of the victims of the catastrophe have had so much unnecessary misery heaped on them time and time again to add to their horrendous loss.
It saddens and ****ing angers me at the same time.

They can shove their apologies up their corporate jacksies, cos they don't give a toss do they. **** off BBC it's a bit late after the event, the damage has already been done. Bunch of ******s.

It's getting to the stage where I think they're doing it on purpose. Wouldn't put it past the publicity hungry ****s.

they arent doing it on purpose. The place is massive and if you look at their sports coverage ie the people who actually know about sport - they rarely make these mistakes, its ****s who work in other areas of this large corporation who dont understand and repeat what is to be honest accepted wisdom for many wrong as it may be.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.
