I would say he's certainly better than Owen (definitely a better all round player - I don't think that is even in question). I think in terms of all the major attributes required to be a top striker Torres is superior in every department except one - when Owen was at his peak circa 2001-2 he was extremely clinical, he'd have one chance in a game and invariably put it away. I don't think Torres is quite there yet, but he is certainly moving in that direction.

Comparing with Fowler is a bit harder. Fowler was great at maneuvering to give himself a scoring option, to make space for himself etc, and I see a lot of that in Torres. What sets Torres apart is like you say his close control and touch, which is imamculate, even when running at speed.

If he ups his finishing by a notch or two, then I tend to agree with Redheart (), he could potentially be our best ever striker (although admittedly there is a long way to go in those stakes). Like Redheart also said, he only cost about £3m-£4m more than Bent.

What a clinical performance, utterly brilliant. Tell you what, Kewell was our best player last night he was awsome, if he stays fit he can be devastating for us. Gerrard was very effective, they were terrified of him. Torres, best finisher we've had at the club since Rush (first period).

      I'm very happy.

At times he did, we all remember how he would have a barren run of 4-5 games without scoring, and then go on a ridiculous scoring streak of 8-9 goals in 4-5 matches. But in the 2002 season, surely you must remember how we'd go away from home, bore teams to death and hit them with one counter attack that Owen would invariably finish off?

Regardless, the point stands IMO that Torres is not yet as clinical as Owen was at his peak, but in time I'm sure he will be!

Hes a far better all round player than Owen, without a doubt.

Torres is unique he has pace, power, skill, vision and he is also fearless. He should be compared against nobody.

I think we can safely say he is our best signing probably since Barnes or Beardsley? Sami has been a legend but Torres wins games.

i might take some stick for this, but i'm gonna say he is our best signing ONLY since Gary Macallister.....the old man was a legend for us.
