    Mascherano doubt for Sunday

Jamie Carragher hails super Steven Gerrard

    by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

JAMIE CARRAGHER today saluted record- breaking skipper Steven Gerrard after Liverpool stormed into the knockout stages of the Champions League last night.

Gerrard became the Reds’ leading European goalscorer when his early strike put them on course for an emphatic 4-0 victory in Marseille.

The goal took him beyond Michael Owen’s club record of 22 in Europe and it was his 10th strike in the Reds’ last 11 games.

Carragher said: “He’s definitely one of the best players in the world. You look at Kaka and Messi, but they probably play further forward.

“But for me he’ll go down alongside Kenny Dalglish as one of the greatest players ever to have played for Liverpool and at the moment he’s probably in the top four or five players in the world.”

Gerrard also became the first Liverpool player since John Aldridge in 1989 to score in seven successive matches.

But Carragher admits he was worried that his skipper might not even get the opportunity to play a part in last night’s Group A decider.

Just seconds after kick-off Gerrard crumpled from a fierce tackle and lay prostrate for fully 30 seconds before getting gingerly to his feet.

“I was worried because he doesn’t normally go down,” added Carragher.

“It looked like it might have been something serious, but he got back up, carried on and won the penalty as well.”

The fact that Liverpool finished second in Group A means that the Reds will face either AC Milan, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Barcelona or possibly Seville in the last 16.

But Carragher insists the draw on December 21 holds no fears.

“We’ll be a big game for them as well don’t forget. When you’re in the Champions League you play the best teams in Europe.

“It’s good players, the top teams in the best stadiums, but if you want to progress you’ve got to beat the best.”

Asked if the result last night lifted pressure on boss Rafa Benitez, Carragher added: “I haven’t got a clue. That’s not up to us. We just get on with playing and at the moment we’re doing all right and we just hope to keep it going.”

Benitez himself, however, believed the much publicised summit meeting with George Gillett may not be as significant as people believe.

“The meeting might be easier than people think,” he said.

Gillett was at last night’s match, but up until an hour after the final whistle the pair still had not spoken.

    But Benitez seemed unconcerned.

He added: “I am focusing totally on the game against Manchester United now.”

Midfield enforcer Javier Mascherano must already be a doubt for Sunday’s clash after he was stretchered off last night with an ankle injury.

He did return after treatment but hobbled slowly out of the stadium after the match in some discomfort. He will be analysed by the Reds’ medical staff today.

Meanwhile, the Reds will travel to Luton in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday, January 6 .

    Hopefully he'll be alright.
What's the latest on Xabi btw?
His injury has dragged on quite a bit.

I'm only concerned with the mancs' front 4. Their central midfield is inferior to ours in every possible combination as long as Sissoko doesn't play.

          Lucas+Gerrard will be fine.

Some other Echo stuff....here's match report. Amazing when you consider that bitter ******* Prentice wrote it.

Gerrard - 10 goals and 9 assists in 11 games! Phenomenal.

            Marseille 0, Liverpool 4
            by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

Fab four show is top dollar

THAT, Mr Gillett, is what you call more bangs for your buck.

The greatest Spanish striker of his generation? A cool £20m.

            A thrilling young Dutchman? £11.5m.

A proven international class centre-forward? That will set you back another £10m.

But the joy experienced by 2,800 Liverpool fans in the old French port of Marseille last night, and hundreds of thousands of Liverpool fans worldwide?

            Priceless. Utterly priceless.

Happily the silver-haired half of the American co-owning partnership was inside the Stade Velodrome to witness it.

The last time George Gillett watched his most expensive individual investment in action, he was a half-fit liability who limped out of the home match with Arsenal with a damaged groin muscle.

Last night Fernando Torres scored a goal of utterly breathtaking beauty and enormous significance.

But Torres was not the architect of this memorable victory.

The Spanish matador is a footballing magician, the most prodigiously gifted striker to pull on a Liverpool jersey since Kenny Dalglish was in his pomp. But he is not Liverpool’s MVP. That status belongs to Steven Gerrard.

Americans like their stats, so just lap up some of the Liverpool skipper’s. His second minute strike was the seventh successive match he has scored since the goalless draw at Blackburn.

Not since John Aldridge 20 years ago has a Liverpool player enjoyed such a consistently ruthless run in front of goal. Before that sequence started Gerrard had scored in another three games in succession.

But goals are just the gloss on his game.

In that 11-match run he has directly created another nine goals, while his influence has been felt in numerous others.

He was a colossus once again last night.

But for one agonising moment it appeared that his involvement in this tie had ended after barely three seconds.

That was the time it took for Marseille to close down Liverpool’s kick-off and launch a shuddering challenge on the Reds skipper.

For 60 seconds the near-on 3,000 Liverpool fans crammed into the most visually impaired corner of the Stade Velodrome held their breath.

Another minute later they were exhaling declarations of boundless joy.

Dirk Kuyt threaded a sweet pass into Gerrard’s path – not the last decisive contribution from the Dutchman by a long way – and Gerrard’s first touch was exceptional.

He raced penetratingly into the Marseille penalty box where Gael Givet hauled him down, but somehow stayed on the pitch.

It was a penalty kick laden with significance, and Gerrard was due a miss – but Mandanda could only parry back into the skipper’s path and he gleefully drove the rebound into the roof of the net.

That strike gave Liverpool the platform they craved.

But a barnstorming tackle from Gerrard on former team-mate Bolo Zenden after 20 minutes showed the attitude which proved Liverpool were not in the mood to relinquish their winning position.

They never looked like doing so.

Seven minutes after Gerrard’s goal, Torres struck. The minute should be immaterial. The date observers witnessed such an epic goal should be etched into the memory banks.

It deserves describing in meticulous detail.

Harry Kewell threaded a pass to Torres’ feet on the left edge of a crowded Marseille penalty area.

Like a leopard on Vaseline he glided effortlessly around one marker. He feinted and dragged the ball thrillingly around two others, then he bypassed another futile attempt to halt him before passing the ball precisely into the corner of the Marseille net.

It was a truly glorious strike and it demoralised Marseille, even if their volatile and partisan fans refused to be silenced all night.

Liverpool, however, seemed impervious to the atmosphere – Jamie Carragher suggested afterwards they were even inspired by it.

Because two minutes after half-time the match was as good as won.

Dirk Kuyt’s value to Liverpool’s cause is not always obvious or appreciated. But his role last night tucked in behind Torres was pivotal – and he received the reward his fine display deserved two minutes after the interval.

Goalkeeper Mantanda’s clearance, with the famous Mistral wind behind him, was wretched, but it still took a precise Harry Kewell pass to put the Dutchman through on goal.

He controlled, drew Mantanda and finished clinically.

From that point on Liverpool were in cruise control.

Fourteen minutes from time Rafa Benitez withdrew Torres – to save him for Sunday’s visit of Manchester United, maybe? – but this time there were no recriminations.

But for an injury to Javier Mascherano it was a faultless night for Liverpool – and Ryan Babel’s superbly finished counter-attack just seconds from time put the seal on a famous night.

If only finishing second in the group does bring one of the European giants to Anfield in the first knockout round, that’s for deliberation on another day.

After all, the Reds won their group last season and drew Barcelona!

For now Liverpool supporters can enjoy a magnificent Marseillaise occasion – and anticipate the visit of Manchester United on Sunday with relish.

MARSEILLE (4-4-2): Mandanda, Taiwo, Rodriguez, Ziani, Cheyrou (Nasri 32), Zenden (Cisse 45), Niang, Cana, Bonnart, Valbuena, Givet (Faty 44 mins). Not used: Mate, Oruma, Zubar, M’Bami.

I hope that's the case, provided Mascherano is unfit.

Not really the type of game for Sissoko seeing as Hargreaves and Carrick rarely get forward, plus he'd give the ball away too much which is not what you want to do against someone like Man Utd.

                    Why?

A game against Man U suits him better than against a tough playing team.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.
