    D-DAY FOR RAFA
Make-or-break Sunday: Two days to the big games Liverpool v Man Utd, kick-off 1.30pm
    By David Maddock 14/12/2007

Rafa Benitez is prepared to again risk the wrath of Liverpool's American owners today.

The Anfield boss faces a tense meeting with Tom Hicks and George Gillett that will decide his future at the club.

Benitez has made the right noises in recent weeks in an attempt to calm the crisis that has gripped Anfield since he critisised the American pair who, in turn, told him to concentrate on team affairs. But he is still in unrepentant mood when it comes to his negotiations with the owners. Many people had expected the Spanish coach to be conciliatory, after angering his employers with his demands to be in complete control of player recruitment.

His tone since a major bust-up with Gillett and Hicks has been one of harmony, and he went as far yesterday to suggest: "I think I will be on their Christmas card list, and they will be on mine."

Yet the key issue at the centre of the dispute has yet to be resolved, and it is clear Benitez will still pursue an aggressive line when he meets in the next 48 hours.

He wants to have the ultimate say on who is bought and sold at the club, and wants to be involved in those deals, while the Americans prefer to leave that responsibility to chief executive Rick Parry. The question of funding is also key to the discussions, as the manager promotes his right to identify the players he needs, and demand the money to sign them.

Yesterday he made it clear he is prepared to risk another backlash when he insisted that he wants to be more than just a coach.

"If you ask if I am a coach or a manager, then I am a manager, and the question for this meeting is, 'how do I manage?'," he said.

"We have had a misunderstanding, and we need to clarify the situation. The relationship was good when we signed Fernando Torres in the summer, and in the future I want the relationship to be good so we can sign more players."

"It is a question of trying to find solutions, because I believe we want the same things - I want to win and they want to win."

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Sounds like it's Rafa or Parry, one of them will have to leave.

If Rafa don't get what he want, to decide who we will sell and buy and be involved in the transfer deals, then he will walk.

He want to stay but if he don't get the above then it's an impossible situation for him.

      IMO.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and goodwill shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers and you will know my name is The Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee. I agree 100%

If Rafa does walk for whatever reason, it will be a sad, sad day which in effect will set the club back years IMO, Rafa has done some fantastic thinga since his arrival at our Club and turned us around from a Club who were going nowhere (as far as the premership was concerned) to being on the brink of acheiving our ultimate goal (premership), now if GG and TH can't see this and realise that we have one of the best Managers out there well, Rafa will have the right to walk out.

To be honest, neither Rafa or indeed GG or TH have come out and said he's off so, let's see what happens the next few weeks, but we need to be prepared for a major upset IF/when it happens

I hope all this bollocks is put to bed after the weekend. The club is still in the CL, challenging for the title, the reserves are on top, the youngsters are doing well and it looks like we have some gems in that squad. Rafa has put this all together sometimes in spite of the buffon we have masquerading as a CEO and if those wallys cant see how he has laid the foundations for current and future success they should fu*k off and sell

From what i`ve read on this forum in the last two months it`s obvious that Parry is in the thick of the arguement with Rafa and the Yanks. The Yanks want Parry to take over the transfer dealings while Rafa wants to handle this himself.
The reason why the Yanks don`t want Rafa handling transfers is that it will cost them millions more in the transfer market as Rafa goes after the best. With the current financial crunch in the US I suspect the Yanks would be happier with Parry settling for the cheaper options each time.
If the Yanks have there way we`ll be back to haggling prices and settling for second best.
The sooner Parry is out of Liverpool FC the better it is for all of us.

                  Seriously,Sack Parry.

every company spots processes and relationships that arent working. and they come up with a solution to fix it. only further down the line after repeated failures to they just say 'eff this' and give up.

if rafa wants to handle everything, they ask why. if its because parry is too slow, because he wants to be fully aware of the terms of negotiations and expectations of a player prior to them joining then i can understand that. He has been in the head coach role before and it hasnt worked. lets hope he outlines why in a clear way to the yanks this week and they take it on board.

if the yanks see rafa as a head coach / tactitian / traininer first and foremost and want him to be free to concentrate on this (clearly he is gifted here) then who can blame them? Any business owner wants their best and most important people to be left to work without interruption at what they do best. to maximise the contribution from them. makes complete sense no?

My gut feeling is that rafa wouldnt mind this if it worked. he had that setup in Valencia and ended up with fooked up home furnishings. He came to LFC and was given the remit to manage. he loves this, is doing well at it and we are seeing the results. My feeling is the yanks came in saying 'nothing will change, you're the manager' but now its becoming clear that they meant head coach. this is the gulf that needs solving but there is room for compromises one either side. unfortunately, it looks like a compromise will remove the need for parry (assuming foster is going nowhere) so his days might be numbered.

the sniping in the media is something they have to agree here and now has to end. if the yanks tell rafa that one more outburst in public and he's finished then i can't blame them. but they have to step upto the plate and if a line of communication failes (parry or foster) then change it. why don't they have each others mobiles?

Let`s start a campaign to get Parry sacked and promote Rafa to an even higher position in Anfield before the Yanks clip Rafa`s wings and hand more responsibility to that bumbling buffoon Parry.

Manchester United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz says he is amazed that Rafa Benitez is under pressure at Liverpool.

United travel to Anfield on Sunday and Benitez faces a crunch meeting with Reds' American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks during the weekend.

Benitez recently criticised the club's transfer policy, upsetting Gillett and Hicks and putting his job on the line.

"After everything Rafa has done for Liverpool he doesn't deserve to be under this pressure," Queiroz said.

"I've known him for a long time and he is a great coach and a great man."

Queiroz fears the "continental" penchant for sacking managers without giving them much time is spilling into the Premier League.

But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's Portuguese assistant has hailed the squad Benitez has built at Anfield, reserving special praise for Spanish striker Fernando Torres.

Torres has scored 12 goals so far this season, while Liverpool are six points behind United with a game in hand.

"I have been in England for five years and I have never seen a Liverpool side looking so strong in the league at this point of the season," said Queiroz.

"Torres is doing really well and I am impressed with him.

"He is already going some way to making the difference for Liverpool this season.

"I think he's a good finisher and he's a player who gives Liverpool something completely different.

"Certainly we will have to be careful of him because he is dangerous. We are always confident in what we can do and we will not worry too much. But we do recognise his quality

I can see ManU being very defensive against us,they know if they give him an inch he`ll take a mile.this should allow us to dominate the game as they sit back on their 18 yrd line panicking that torres will get a through ball from SG.

One thing is for sure. Rafa can't go on like this not knowing if he still will have a job the next day or if he will sacked.

The meeting must guarantee that Rafa stays. Give him a new deal that guarantees that he will take care of the transfers or sack Parry.

Parry can still be involved but then he should do the job Foster is now doing, a living e-mail.

I don't think you can solve this in any other way.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

Which is why Crouch needs to play. A team that defends deep asks for trouble when facing Crouch.
