Gerrard has never played consistently well in that position. He should be played at box to box midfielder and we should sign someone, who is specialist in that role.

We do need a central defender. We need 4 top centre halves and 1 or 2 youngsters waiting in the wings. Hyypia is getting on and if he and agger are out longterm, we would suffer massively if Hobbs had to play every game.

We will get an able cover on the cheap though so it won't massively affect our budget. Someone like Mellberg. He's be alright to have as back up and is on a free at end of season.

It's not Football Manager, it's hard to have 4 top centre halves in one squad and keep them happy. You can't chop and change your defence, it would be a disaster.

Mellberg wouldn't come from Villa to sit on the bench.

We do need at least four players who understand our system and can play at CB though. United have Brown, O'Shea and Pique who can all do a job for them. Hobbs needs time and opportunities but we need someone else in the squad IMO considering that despite he excellent form Sami will not last much longer.
