Why would Rafa spend £17m on Mascherano; having already spent £10m on Xabi, £6m on Lucas & already having Stevie G unless he's thinking about this formation? Xabi & Mascherano are holding players; both excel in that position; Stevie Gerrard likes to break forward so surely this formation suits our players best.

As for it not being attacking enough at home I have to disagree. With this formation we'd essentially have 4 attackers supported by two overlapping fullbacks; it'd actually give us more options.

The thing is....Rafa hasn't spent £17m on Mascherano, has he?
And we don't know for sure that he will.

First of all, I would argue that we didn't play 4-2-3-1 against Reading. It was more like a 4-3-3.

Secondly, I posted earlier that we don't have the personnel to play 4-2-3-1. There is a lot of attacking responsibility on the wide players and ours are either not good or fit enough.

Benitez's Valencia proved that there is nothing wrong with the system providing you have the personnel.

So Pennant isn't a real wide midfield player?

He wanted to sign Alves to play RM, once he was priced out he went for Pennant.

You're also completely ignoring the fact that Rafa has always kept 4 strikers in his squad, which is a clear indication he's always looked at 4-4-2 as our primary structure.
