Liverpool boss Benitez: Torres proof I can succeed with big-money signings
    tribalfooball.com - December 20, 2007

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez believes the success of Fernando Torres is proof he can work successfully at the top end of the transfer market.

Benitez, particularly in Spain, has been criticised for his judgement when buying players, but with Torres he argues: "The success of Fernando Torres is not down to the football ability of Fernando but his mentality and his quick adaptation to the English game - which we were confident he was capable of doing.

"Before we gambled without money and now we have been able to gamble with more money. I prefer to have those risks because I want to gamble and fight to be champions.

"If you have these opportunities (to spend big on a major star) it is important to take advantage of them."
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I have stated this for a while in defence of Rafa - this is the first time we have had "big" money to spend on 1 player and he has been a huge success

I think if he was backed to buy 1 or 2 more "big" signings we would see a more settled looking first team as I feel there is little between many of the options we have for certain positions at present ie Benayoun / Pennant at RM, Aurelio / Riise at LB, Arboloa / Finnan at RB etc - a few more big signings would see them joing Gerrard, Carra, Torres, Reina, Agger etc being in the team more often than not, thus creating a more settled first 11 - Rafa will always rotate as it's in his nature but I don't think he would do it quite as much if he had better players at his disposal

This I think is the biggest difference between us and the likes of the Scum - we have Gerrard & Torres as genuine match-winners whereas they have Rooney, Rinaldo, Tevez, Giggs and Nani who are all capable of being match winners
At a football club there's a holy trinity- the players the manager and the supporters, Directors dont come into it, they are only there to sign the cheques " - Bill Shankly

      Tevez? Nani?

Bollcks mate. Nani is no better than someone like Babel. Giggs isn't setting the world alight this season. Tevez looks slightly better than Saha but scores less than Crouch.

Sounds like another very thinly veiled dig at the owners, to me.

If you look back at what he did at Valencia then Canizares, the whole back four, Albelda, Baraja, Vicente, Aimar and Mista played more or less week in week out when fit.

That's nine out of eleven players. Not that much rotation there. so the myth that Rafa have always rotated a lot of players isn't true.

It's not just 'big' money though is it - he has signed Babel and Lucas who are clearly good players now and will only get better, potentially world class match winners and he paid, for Liverpool in recent years a lot of money for unproven potential (10 and 6 mill was it?).
It's only 2 years or so ago we were losing out on the likes of Walcott, Bale, Denillson etc.. because we could afford the extra couple of mill to sign a highly thought of youngster
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Agree on Nani, put him in purely as he has potential and has shown promise and ability to turn a game already this season but very similar to Babel at present. Disagree on Tevez though - he is quality and recently has been showing the form that I feared he would at Utd. He will put in a significant contribution to Utd being there or thereabouts this season, nothing surer

I wonder what would be the price for Benzema. He is a monster of a player and is very young. Just imagine him with Torres. I'd sell couple of our players to get money for him.

I read somwhere that manure are trying to buy Benzema and the price quoted was 21 milions. Might be another BS story though.

It's not a fact but I'd agree. He's really found his feet now. My mates who support Man U are of the opinion that Tevez has been brilliant since he settled.

Not only the owners but also the media who claim he's wasted the clubs money. He was only given decent money to spend this summer and both youngsters Torres and Babel have been outstanding for their first 6 months in the prem.

Your too good to be true, can't take the ball off you you got a heavenly touch, you pass like Sounness to rush. And when we're pissed in the bars we thank the Lord that your ours

Have to disagree I think that Babel still looks like Bambi...he is still finding his legs and looks awkward and raw quite a bit of the time.

I hate all this bollox about big signings. We dont need big signings we need good signing which are not always the same things.

                              Examples

Sam Hyppia how much did we pay again?
Daniel Agger, how much for one of the best young centre backs in Europe?
