    Gerrard v3.0?

Under Houllier Gerrard was a real box-to-box midfielder.
Under Rafa he started playing more as an attacking midfielder.

Now the past few games have seen Gerrard playing much deeper than usual, level with Mascherano/Alonso in DM positions, picking the ball from the defence and attempting to start moves, as opposed to bursting forward and being on the end of moves.

Anyone else think that Gerrard is much less effective this way?

Is Rafa experimenting with Gerrard just as he has been with 4-3-3 recently?

        Absolutely

He should be allowed a roaming role, let him go where the action is IMO.

Depends who we are up against really. Elano looks a very good tallent, wouldn't fancy leaving Mascherano on his own against City's midfield.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

He's been playing deeper for the past 3-4 games or so, so it's not cause of one player.

He has seemed to be playing deep a lot when playing with Mascher all season IMO. It doesn't suit him and it is part of why I'm not sure of their partnership in central midfield, certainly when in combination with the type of options we have further forward.

Gerrard only plays as a roaming player when we play with 5 in midfield, any other time he is restricted, so it just depends on how many players rafa wants to play in midfield

Gerrard seemed to play fairly deep in the first half today but was pushed much further forward in the second.

His recent performances look like Fat Fwank's for chelsky. He does less for the midfield than he used to but he scores more.
