This is probably simplistic, but I think we've missed Xabi's distribution recently and Gerrard is more of a goal threat than Kuyt, with an even greater work rate and more of an overall contribution, so this could be a way of getting more quality onto the pitch.

What spells more goal threat to you: Kuyt and Gerrard at CM or Gerrard and Alonso at CM. I'd much rather see Kuyt in there and Alonso or Mascher on the bench. I find this lineup bizarre for a home match all though I'm sure we'll win.
