Anyone else fail to see Alonso tonight?

I'm sorry he was awful tonight. Your all going on about Rafa only playing Torres upfront but when you look at 3 of the midfielders there were goal scorers there! Gerrard, Alonso and Kewell.

Alonso just needs more game time but yet why is he the one player that always has to slow the game down when they're already sitting with 10 men behind the ball? His passing was abysmal and he was off the pace entire second half. I even noticed how he refused to pass the ball to Mascher (who once again was superb) when he was in space, and I can't help feeling there's a bit of jealously there towards Mascher.

Kewell - looked **** scared of controlling the ball as well as no pace, no bite and always wanting to take the glory shot from distance, but he can't even bring a save outta the keeper anymore. He was just another passenger tonight and surely now we must cash in and sell otherwise he'll become a bargain bin special if he isn't already..

Gerrard has looked disinterested since his winner against Derby, in fact I would have rested him tonight and had him on the bench he's looking tired as well. He showed a def lack of composure with his first half chance he could have steadied, controlled and popped it past Kirkland. But no he tried some audacious flick that was straight at the keeper. His second half golden chance of a winner should have been stuck away - yes it was a good save but did he not see Kirkland was right up on the LH post he had the whole RH side to put it past him and put all these sack Rafa threads to bed early! Instead he tried to be cute and poke it past him.. I'm not gonna mention his poor clearance that led to that stunning goal.

I think the players are more to blame after tonight - to say Rafa doesn't care is crazy did you not see him throwing that tracksuit down in disgust as well as pointing at that cunt bennet ref saying you got the result you came here for. We had enough talent out there tonight to win it regardless of whether we were playing with one man upfront or not!

I'm the eternal optimist but I reckon the title is over but I never thought we would win it realistically after getting rid of so many players last summer.

Why can't the Mancs or Arse drop points like we do

Your too good to be true, can't take the ball off you you got a heavenly touch, you pass like Sounness to rush. And when we're pissed in the bars we thank the Lord that your ours

What I did see was that Xabi found himself labouring around the edge of the box, frequently being asked to get forward and support Torres. That is not his game but it is something he was cajoled or forced to do because Gerrard went walkabout and left Torres isolated.

I don't know if it was by design or just Xabi feeling he needed to do it but he's not cut out for that particular job - just as Momo is not due to his inept technical ability (even though he has the engine to do it). I despaired when Gerrard popped up to collect the ball from Carra or appeared on the wings trying to get something going, leaving Torres to fight off Wigan's defenders.

He probably isnt back to 100% match fitness.

Also i think the midfield with 5 players might have been a bit clustered for him to operate...

We noticed Xabi more advanced too. Just like we've seen Momo play the advanced midfielder at times. It simply doesn't work and yet Rafa simply ignores this fact and fails to change the system.
We all knew it wasn't working last night as the crowd was muted - almost funeral like and yet changes weren't made to correct it.

Personally I'd sell Alonso. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a cracking player but I don't think he's what we need and he doesn't compliment Gerrard.
I think his return to fitness is going to pose Rafa with a conundrum that will result in him messing around with our formation just to accomodate him.

Will Rafa leave Mascherano out? That's not going to convince the owners that forking out the £17m for him is the right thing to do for a backup central midfielder.

Personally I think that is madness.

Only way I would contemplate it is if he stated categorically he wanted to leave. Even then considering the length of contract I would want at least 25M
                    pounds.

We should not be selling the players in our squad that can pass the ball forward to feet. Xabi is by far our best exponent of that skill. We have hardly seen Xabi with Torres yet and for me he is still Stevie's best partner in CM.

I woulden't sell Xabi either, but just face the fact that he isen't a forward going midfielder. He plays his distributional game fantastic, but he is not a goalscoring midfielder. He has scored 14 goals for us, 2 from our own half (cracking goals ) and taking away the ones scored on set-pieces tell the rest of the story...

If we want to play the formation from last night, we need a midfielder that is an actual attacking midfielder - which we don't have in the squad. We have plenty of defensive / center mids, but no attacking midfielder, which to me implies that Raffa made a funny selection of formation last night...

If we are to sell Alonso, Rafa would have to buy Mascherano and keep Leiva as the distributional midfielder. Althought selling Momo would be the sensible option

We could sell both Momo (now) and Alonso (summer). That would leave us with SG and Mascher that we know are good enough, Lucas who looks very promising IMO and the wild shot that is Guthrie. He`s doing well at Bolton now and would probably settle for a fourth choice place in the squad.
Xabi can be an excellent player, but hasn`t shown it regulary the last two seasons. I could be tempted to sell for the right price, but only if Mascher is signed permanently.
