our game is nowhere near as hard and tough as it used to be and suffers for it. time to turn it up a notch or two and sort the fancy dans like ronaldo out once and for all.

the game of football is not all about skill and finese. sure it plays its part but that alone leaves you with what? spanish football? great. really exciting stuff.

I prefer to see a good hard slide-in tackle over a back heel every day of the week. stuart pearce was fantastic in that respect.

One of my great memories of watching liverpool play was when steve mcmahon and john ebbrell went 50/50 for a tackle and the ball changed shape. ebbrell was carried off on a stretcher with a broken leg. well thats the way I remember it anyway. the other was of john barnes dribbling past defenders against QPR at anfield and scoring in a 4-0 or 4-1 victory.

The great thing about players in the past with exceptional talent such as dalglish and best is that they were able to produce this skill having had ten bells kicked out of them. the likes of henry and ronaldo get so much protection these days its no wonder they can do what they do.

is football more exciting now? is it ****.

My favourite player of all time was Souness. He had a good mixture of abilities.

He was as hard as nails but had great skill as well. Not the step-over, drop the shoulder, kind of skill; rather great touch, passing and awareness.

Souey was indeed the dogs bollox.
              Liverpool born and bred.

Take the physical aspect away and football is still football.

Take the technical aspect away and it is something else.

I think it is important to remember that.

One is fundamental and the other is not.

The fact that different cultures produce a different balance of physical and technical football is what makes the sport so universally fascinating.

The high tempo and intesity of English football makes it more accessible but personally, I am equally as entertained watching a tactical, chess-like Italian game.

Move on mate, fitness, speed and skill are now what this game is about. The halcyon days of hardmen ruling the game are gone.Roy Keane was the last.now free flowing movement and counter attack rule.

I wouldn't class Finnan as a wing back, he is a defender first and foremost. A wing back has pace, gets up and down the touchline, scores and assist and is an attacking threat......we do not play this way!!

Is anyone else pissed off with how long it has taken? we apparently agreed the fee and he passed the medical on Monday - it's now Friday FFS.

Anyone listening to 5 Live Sport will realise Steve Claridge is a tool.

Anyway, Gabriele Marcotti believes that Martin Skrtel is not the Vidic type defender a lot of people are making him out to be. The only similarity with Vidic is that, he is big and comes from an unknown area.

Skrtel is a more ball playing defender like Agger and is not as physical as Vidic but he is younger than Vidic and will probably learn the trade from Hyypia about the style of the Premiership.
