    Captain Carra

    http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drill...80114-1242.htm

Rafael Benitez today confirmed Jamie Carragher will captain Liverpool on his 500th appearance for the club against Luton Town tomorrow night.
Carragher, who will see his landmark achievement recognised by the club before the game, will wear the skipper's armband following a special request from regular captain Steven Gerrard.

"Jamie will play tomorrow night," said Benitez. "I was talking with Steven Gerrard and he said to me that whether he is in the team or not, Jamie should be the captain. So Carra will captain the side."

he should captain the side anyway.

Gerrard is no leader on the pitch

But he is more marketable as a player.

The reality is Carra is the real captain on the pitch, Gerrard is captain off the pitch.
        We come not to play.

well he may be, but he doesnt act like it. Where is he in all this mess.

He certainly hasn't come out and said we are behind Rafa (queue panto jokes)

Gerrard is a poor captain, and ive said so fromt he day he was first announced as permanent captain

Agreed. He can be a leader sometimes in time of showing the way. But there is a lot more required. In particular, he should keep his own head up and gee up the lads more when we are in trouble. Maybe he needs to recapture his Istanbul spirit.
            'and boy could he play!.

I agree, but like Bekham and England the captain nowadays is a tool for the club to use, a face that represents the club/team.

Show a picture of Gerrard and Carra to some random person and they probably recognise Gerrard more time then they will recognise Carra.

Why is he silent, feck knows, maybe he doesn't like Rafa and is hoping for an English boss like he wanted (Maclaren is available as is Fat Sam ), Maybe he is a company man through and through and is going with whatever the owners/Parry is feeding him.

He should be captain and that would free Stevie to just play football, but if he got the captaincy taken off him he would probably move

I'm surprised there haven't been headlines in the S*n saying "GERRARD STRIPPED OF CAPTAINCY" or some other bollocks to try to undermine us...

I'm not sure I think Gerrard is a good captain in the sense that he is symbolic of a lot of out recent triumphs and is a more high profile figure than Carragher which in the modern game is as important as anything else in some ways.

On the pitch he is an example in many games when we are doing poorly - how many times has he dragged us back from defeat or found a winning goal. Enough to justify his armband I would say.

That doesn't mean that he is the leader we need on the pitch. Carra is a great defensive leader and Mascher and Alonso in there own ways provide a form of leadership on the pitch but we do lack an experienced attacking player who can give guile and drive to our attacks.

On a different note I really don't think players coming out in support of the manager does any good. In the end it has no influence on those above - anyone remember the fawning of Lampard and Terry about Ranieri and the threats of walking out etc. Did it make a difference - no. Did it make them look a bit daft when they suddenly sucked up to Mourinho as they had to as their new manaegr - yes. Long term players coming out and adding to the PR mess would not have helped the club or Rafa in any way IMO. They need to show their backing on the pitch.

Makes a nice change doesn't it.

500 appearances is ****ing brilliant and he's still only 29/30. What's the all time record. Callaghan?

Rafa missed the perfect opportunity to give Carra the armband permanently when Stevie offered to give it up after he nearly joined Chelsea. It's a shame, IMO, as although there have been many occasions when Stevie has saved us with a last-minute goal, there have been just as many when the bottom lip came out and you could see him acting like a spoiled kid because the game wasn't going his way. That's not the kind of example you want to see your captain setting. I also don't like his overly English bias- both in the way he puts country before club, and in the unfortunate comments he has dropped about there being too many foreigners in the game. I thought that was unforgiveably disloyal towards players we owe a lot to- Pepe, Xabi, Mascher, Torres and Sami, just for a start. Maybe they think nothing of it cos they know Stevie's not the brightest, but that's another reason Carra would make a better captain for me.

I know why you say that, but it's wrong IMO. Gerrard is growing into a superb captain. Not perfect but to say he is no leader is quite simply wrong. When he takes his next step, so will we IMO.
