Benitez in £17m race to hang on to Mascherano
    EXCLUSIVE by ASHLEY GRAY -

Liverpool have only a week to complete the signing of Javier Mascherano or risk losing him at the end of the season.

Mascherano has become a central figure in the battle behind the scenes between Rafa Benitez and the club's American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

The Argentina midfielder is free to negotiate his future with other clubs from February 1 under the terms of his 'loan' arrangement.

The player, signed from West Ham almost a year ago, is 50 percent owned by businessman Kia Joorabchian's sports investment company MSI and has a £17million buy-out clause in his complicated Anfield contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Benitez desperately wants to keep the player, who has become a key performer in the holding role. Mascherano wants to stay at the club but at £17m he is not seen as an 'impact signing' by some members of the Liverpool board.

Mascherano, who is frustrated that the deal has not been completed, told Argentina's Radio La Red: 'I would love to stay here. I have tried and I've adapted to the city very well.'

Liverpool, struggling to find further investment to strengthen the team while talks about the refinancing deal for the new stadium have been going on, were still trying on Thursday to sell Momo Sissoko to Juventus to help fund the Mascherano deal.

'Javier wants to stay,' a friend confirmed from Argentina on Thursday night, 'but it is looking less likely every day. Liverpool must make up their minds and decide if they want him. Right now it looks as if he might go — and he is very reluctant to do that.

'He may not be considered as an impact signing by some, but the manager knows the qualities he brings to the team and every team needs his type of player in the modern game. Javier believes it is time for him to settle now. The rest is up to Liverpool.'

It has been noted that while Manchester United's owners did not delay in signing Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves to play the holding role, Liverpool's own American supremos have not moved as quickly to land Mascherano.

Liverpool may be running out of time but they still have first option on a player who has 35 Argentina caps at the age of 23.

The list of alternative clubs is growing with Barcelona, Manchester City, Juventus and Tottenham among those who have expressed an interest and are waiting for encouragement from Mascherano's aides.

The £17m fee was agreed under the terms of Mascherano's move from West Ham. His Argentina agent Walter Tamer is believed to favour a move to Juventus and warned: 'Liverpool have not made any offer at all to buy Javier and he is likely to go to Italy next season.'

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

So do I mate, I think it'll be announced that he's staying pretty soon. If Sissoko goes it will be announced even sooner.

I know 17mill is a lot of money but the boy is quality. It still baffles me how he couldn't get into the West Ham team it really does. It's not like he's got a bad attitude.

He's been savage since he's been with us, he's a winner and he buzzes off the crowd. He knows how much we love our football and he knows that we love him. He won't be going anywhere.

This stuff about him going to Juventus is bolloks, he'll sign for us soon and we'll have a belter of a player with us for a long long time.

This is all bollocks from his Italian agent trying to engineer a move there for him so he can pick up a nice commision cheque from Joorabchian. Mascher wants to stay at Anfield end of.

The refinancing always gonna happen regardless of the "not going to happen" reports.

More importantly, we finally look like getting Masch permanently, which will keep Rafa very happy.

We can still get these two cunts out by continuing these protests and maintaining the financial boycotts.

              Liverpool's £17m for Mascherano

Liverpool's American owners are ready to signal their commitment to the club by funding the £17million capture of Javier Mascherano.

Tom Hicks and George Gillett are confident they will today wrap up the refinancing package that will strengthen their control at Anfield, despite efforts by DIC to buy them out.

And with it, the two billionaires want to offer a message of intent to fans which they hope will put behind them the tension and unrest of the past few weeks. By signing midfielder Mascherano on a permanent basis, it will offer concrete evidence to fans that there is still big money to invest in players, and they intend to spend big in their quest for a successful team.

But more significantly, it will show their backing for manager Rafael Benitez.

Liverpool will have work to do to persuade the midfielder to sign, though, because last night he hinted that he could be ready to move on from England. He has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus or Barcelona.

He said: "At Liverpool I have found my home. However I feel that now the time has come to move on. Maybe I would like to leave the Premier League. A move to Juventus? Well I like to travel."

But there is now real determination to convince the Argentinian to stay. Hicks and Gillett were the subject of protests from supporters at recent matches, who made calls for their removal as owners of the club, and they want to ease that situation.

A source at bankers RBS, who are offering the refinance package, confirmed that the £350million deal should go through today and that, contrary to fans fears, will be stacked largely against Hicks and Gillett, and not the club.

Benitez is hoping to complete the sale of Momo Sissoko to Juventus for £9m over the weekend.

Still hardly 'big backing' though, they're only going to do this because of the Sissoko money.

Like I said before in this thread there would be movement on this once the re-financing was sorted out... (IMO of course) They want to appease the supporters and show they have always meant what they set out to do..(abait a little too late in my opinion) to make us competitive...

An appeasement is all this can be seen as... But know we have no choice but wait and ride this out to see what these two wide boys will do next!!!

Yes they can put pressure on the club to start taking the steps to solving Masche's long term future at Liverpool and yes they can begin to look for other clubs willing to buy him if Liverpool say they are not interested.

We all know that Rafa wanted to get this sorted earlier rather than later, but with all this refinancing **** going on there is nothing the club can do until it's all sorted out... After all until G&H sign their new Loan agreement ownership of the club is still up in the air.

IMO they G&H will want to sign him on a full contact and they will give the go ahead once everything else is finalised (refinancing that is).. If Masche's owners are prepared to allow the club to pay by installments G&H would be stupid not to. Moreover if we are going to sell players, which is a cert come the end of the season well have the money in the bag (imo)...

So lads lets just relax and stay objective until the dust settles and then we can have a clearer view as to what these **** wits are really all about...
Now let us see if this actually comes to pass..........

                            Hope so
It'd be criminal to let him go.

If Masch signs, between himself, Skertl and 10m for Momo (or 9m or whatever it is), I'll be happy. That's a lot of business for a Jan window.
