Rafa Benitez tells Xabi Alonso: Step things up

Rafa Benitez tells Xabi Alonso: Step things up
    Feb 4 2008
by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

RAFAEL BENITEZ believes Xabi Alonso must raise his game to win back a place in the Liverpool starting line-up.

The Spanish midfielder, who played the full 90 minutes of the midweek defeat at West Ham United, failed to make even the bench for Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland at Anfield.

Alonso has struggled to rediscover his form after twice being sidelined this season with a metatarsal problem.

The 26-year-old suffered the initial problem in September which was then aggravated during his comeback match at home to Arsenal in late October.

Alonso returned to action six weeks ago, but has since started just five games as he competes with Javier Mascherano and Lucas for a place in central midfield alongside Steven Gerrard.

Alonso’s hopes of an immediate chance to stake his claims will be frustrated as the Spaniard is suspended for Sunday’s visit to Chelsea after picking up a fifth domestic booking of the season at Upton Park.

And Benitez said: “Xabi needs to step it up. When you are not 100% fit, you want to play every game because you need to play more games to build up your fitness.

“But if Gerrard, Mascherano or Lucas are playing well, it means there is competition for places which is good for the team.

“Xabi knows he needs to work harder if we wants to have a place in the team.

“Mascherano was back from suspension and he gives us balance in the middle and Gerrard can be more free going forward.

“Lucas was playing really well the other day so we had three midfielders, and we needed to have wingers or strikers on the bench. That’s why Alonso was not in the squad on Saturday.”

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

That's how it's got to be.

Meanwhile, Kuyt will no doubt start against Chelsea. I'm not a Rafa or Kuyt hater, but a bit of consistency wouldn't go amiss

That's as public a "kick up the arse" as Rafa every gives out if you ask me

But why single out Alonso? Hardly the worst offender is he?

He was referring to his previous game where he had played well

Agree he was poor on Saturday though - that said he was never going to justify himself playing on left of midfield ..... was lost out there

Kuyt has been our most consistent performer this season...unfortunately.

Apart from Kuyt, yes he is.

He played quite well imo. He's still getting used to his role in the side but you can see his quality. Very good short passer of the ball.

Looked more like a criticism of his efforts / work rate / attitude than a single performance though mate - although he hasn't performed well since his return, I agree he hasn't been the worst performer and Rafa rarely openly critices his players in public so there must be more to it. I would read it that he isn't putting it in in training which surprises me. There was rumours that Xabi was very close to Pako, maybe there's a personal issue here? I'm sure Xabi's not happy about not being a certain starter like he has been. Lots of possible reasons

Xabi's heart is simply not in it any more.

Shame, cause he's a cracking player.

I believe he will go back to Spain, most likely Barca.

I doubt that they'd be interested - and I doubt he'd be interested in warming their bench either becuase he sure as hell doesn't have what's needed to be in their first team.

Some players need an arm around their shoulder (Marky), some will respond better to a kick up the backside. Several players could do with some kicks, maybe this is what people like to call man management...
