funny we used to have the same conversations with Stevie, Hamman and Murphy starting

I think the only formation that can accomondate them all is a 3-5-2.
4-4-2 puts Stevie in the wrong position both attacking and defensivly as he drifts inwards and doesn't cover LB or RB positions.
Could argue a 4-4-1-1 but then that postion is again better filled by another.
Its times like these we learn to live again FF

      Loads.

And if you look at last season you'll see all our big results came with all three in the team (bar the Man Utd win I think)

Makes you wonder had Rafa intended to play the season with wing backs, it's no secret he wanted Alves and Aurelio isn't an out and out LB. But when he didn't get Alves he had to adjust his plans. the team might have looked like:

        ----------------Reina-----------------
        ---------Hyypia Agger Carra-----------
        ---Alves--------------------Aurelio----
        ---------Sissoko------Alonso----------
        ---------------Gerrard----------------
        ------------Crouch-------------------
        ---------------------Kuyt------------

Then you can still use Riise who would make a good LWB as it's almost what he does now anyway, youd' have Bellamy on the Bench if we needed a change up front, garcia if you needed a change behind the front two, and also Pennant and Gonzalez if we wanted to change to out and out wingers.

What happened to our wing play?

Where is speedy, Kewell injury has hit us hard, harder than we might have imagined, maybe Rafa hasn't come to terms with having to adjust to what he thought he was going to do with what has eventually transpired to be the actuality.

how has kewell's injury hit us hard?

its not as if he's had a long consistent run in the team ever.

I too wonder what has happened to Gonzalez, after all the hoo har about his work permit, I was expecting big things. He looked good the couple of times I saw him in La Liga, but he's played what all of about 90 mins in 3 appearances all of which as sub. I wonder if he's got niggling injury or hasn't settled like Rafa had hopped, something definately seems wrong tho as you'd expect him to play more especially being a bit light on the left with Kewell and Risse out.

Which brings me to another point, will we start performing when JAR comes back? Is it just a coincidence that our run of bad luck has coincided with him being out of the squad. I would have fancied him tear Bouhlarouz appart today, and would definately have had an impact in the Derby had he been able to start.

Riise is a big miss definately, one of our only players who can actually score against that bunch of ****e we played today too.

Having to play SG on the left is just todays example, for instance.

yup, that was a silly place to start him.

i'd have played bellamy on the left

Yeah but we've had to do without Kewell loads of times, he's hard been fit for the past 2 years!

He certainly hasn't been such a regular part of the team that he could be considered irreplaceable.

No, by far did I mean irreplaceable, but when we needed cover on the left, Riise, Speedy, Aurielo (??eek!), Kewell would have been the ideal man to come in and offer some skill & width, hence what has happened since the WC to him has hurt us more than we prob could have imagined, and was not foreseen obviously.

                          I see your point.

We have been damages by having Kewell and Rise out at the same time.

I wonder why we haven't tried Speedy a bit more though. I know his experience is limited, but we bought him for just this role, and he did gain experience doing that while we couldn't get him into the country.
