A pennant related musing: Thinking outside the box or pure lunacy?

Okay this is just an idea that came to me. I'm not even sure that it is any good myself but I wonder if Pennant could play as an attacking right back. He is athletic and has an excellent cross from deep. Obviously he would suffer from a lack of height and defensive instincts but what is it that separates him from say Asley Cole who made the transition in his youth?

Just a musing - I'm not suggesting we should try it this weekend or anything.

I'm sure Gerrard could but that is certainly wasting his talents elsewhere. If he isn't ahppy playing right midfield these days I think he would explode if forced to play RB.

I wasn't suggesting it, more saying it's plausible. Although these days Gerrards starting to piss me off more and more, he should be happy to be on the team sheet, the way he's picky is more infuriating.

He can't even play as a winger let alone a wing-back. We saw his defensive capabilities when he let Gudjohnsen score last season

I like Pennant a lot when he's on form, skillful, but i fear he'll be gone as soon as we get cash for better quality players. mmmm......Ok then, Pennant, So he has a long future with LFC looks like.

As a defender though, i'm not sure, as you say Cashley is a similar build & style, i suppose if it was a defender who's best assett was his attacking prowess it could work, when you have a team pinned back, looking for a goal, dominant in possession etc.

But as a full time attacking right back i'm not sure, time to time maybe. In an emergency.

Gerrard did in the derby years ago. He was awesome. I remember thinking at the time he could have took ****face Nevilles's England shirt of his back any time he chose.

Gerrard in his early days played everywhere. I remember him playing right back a few games and people were talking about that being his new position.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

I remember that too. Gerrard was outstanding at right back, and I recall Jimmy Armfield saying at the time (around 2000) that he saw Gerrard's long term future at right back.

I think Gerrard's best season was 2006, when he was mainly playing a free role from the right. I think playing him in a similar role and position now would give our team a lot more balance, and could make Gerrard more effective than he is now.

I think Pennant could do a job there. He seems to be more disciplined these days and he has quick feet.

Some additional training from the defensive guru Rafa would see him become a good right back.

I remember Stevie playing left back at Man City one year!

Pennant cant defend whereas Cole can, Also he would be sent off a lot as his temperament does not suit having to tackle people.

Plus he`s not a bad back up RW if we sign a quality RW in the summer.

I don't think that pennant has the temproment to play as a defender, he gets wound up too easily when people get the better of him IMO

very true, but Rafa can not win with where he plays Gerrad, wherever he plays him people think he'd better in another position.
