I think this one good season stuff is bollocks. He changed role and was less obvious but he was doing very good defensive work and linked defense and attack really nicely. I think he is cleary worth £15m - we have made a choice that we need to be more dynamic in midfield which is perfrectly reasonable but IMO Alonso would be a big loss. We need to strengthen the wide options and get a creative forward in before we look to alter our CM positions.

I would only sell him if it meant getting in a top quality winger or support striker.

Oh yeah, absolutely. That's my thinking too, with regards to potentially having £20m or so coming in for Alonso.

how long has he left on his contract?? didnt he sign one in the summer??

anything around 13-17m is good business for me

Not sure i'd take under £15m.

I think he's WORTH £15m and we arguably dont NEED to sell, so it should take some over-valuation for us to let him go. Ergo, £20m should do it.

He's still highly regarded in Spain and would easily fetch that price.

I dont think it matters what our CM pecking order is. The price would be dictated largely by how badly the buying club might need him. He might not indispensible to us, because we're strong in CM but if a buyer isnt, then he's more valuable.

No, you are. If we do not get 15M GBP at least, we should keep him.

Well he's a Basque, his dad played for Barca - and he's currently down the pecking order at Liverpool = so of course he'd consider a move. A player just wants to play at the end of the day. he's a tough cookie so I'd imagine he'd be prepared to work his way back into the team, but if he stopped getting picked for Spain then I'd imagine he'd be looking for an exit.
I'd prefer to keep hold of him. A top team needs 4 central midfielders, and on his top form, he'd be in our best first 11. Anyone of our central midfielders could get injured and with Momo gone beyond Gerrard, Mascher, Alonso and Lucas we don't have any obvious replacements.

He should contemplate getting his form back, then contemplate getting back in the team, if he could then contemplate helping us to win some games by doing something other than getting booked and passing backwards slowing the game down I for one would appreciate him doing that.
He was an automatic choice for Spain until the injuries so there should be no shortage of takers. Use him as leverage to get a striker or winger in

if players get into good positons xabi will make room for himself and find them with a pass. you don't need pace to do this. even at the end of last year zenden worked really well off him because zenden was brilliant at getting into space to receive the ball. he generally ****ed it up after that though... without movement off the ball xabi can't play his natyral game and to be honest i think rafa tried to coach him out of it anyway. a sad example of crushing players to suit some system rather than using them to play good football.

I still love him for being the only player that actively looks for the 50 yard shot
