Messi currently has 671 from 823 appearances, while his Portuguese rival has hit 695 goals from 966

As it stands, the Juve forward has stats that look like this: 966 games - 695 goals = 0.72 goals-per-game.

        Barca's captain currently has: 823 Games - 671 Goals = 0.82 goals-per-game.

Awesome, both of them but Messi is the GOAT

Neither are the greatest. They play in an era when you can't be tackled and the pitches are ****ing perfect. Best of the modern era without doubt.

They also play in an era with advanced sports science, thousands of data points at their fingertips and refined tactics.

I kind of agree. For me, Diego is the greatest.

You could make the exact same argument against Maradona over Pele and Puskas and other greats that played in earlier eras. And so on.

So anyone who comes later is destined to never be a good as those who came before, because the world continues to advance and the game evolves?

What about defending also being much more sophisticated now than it was in earlier eras?
That would have to count in favour of the modern players?

Yeah, in fairness to the past legends, they didn't have the longevity & protection that the likes of Messi & Ronaldo have nowadays so to compare the figures of Mueller & Puskas, it's a no brainer that the past legends will in doubt fair better in today's game in numbers & longevity

Is it though? I wonder how many times Pele faced a low block and 10 men behind the ball in the Brazilian league back in the 60s?

I dare say they had savages to tear the legs off ya for the rest of the game when ya scored a goal...players like him used to get hacked down from behind...He used to call those tackles as works of criminals, low lifes, etc.

It was brutal, I know. But it doesn’t mean for certain that he’d still have scored as freely against more defensively organised teams of today.
