LFC do the quadruple of trebles

Lifted from Martin Tyler's section on Sky Sports' website, a couple of little titbits.

I suspect the second contributor is a Manc...

    QUADRUPLE OF TREBLES

Martin, Fernando Torres scored a Premier League hat-trick on Saturday against Middlesbrough. It is Liverpool's fourth hat-trick of the season with Torres scoring a League Cup hat-trick against Reading and Yossi Benayoun scoring a Champions League hat-trick against Besiktas and an FA Cup hat-trick against Havant. Has any club ever scored hat-tricks in all four competitions in a season before? Andrew Barton

MARTIN SAYS: What a good shout Andrew! My trusty helpers at skysports.com have been busy scouring the record books and we think you are right - Liverpool are the first side to score hat-tricks in the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the same season. Even on all their European escapades since the Premier League began, Manchester United haven't managed it, and neither have Arsenal or Chelsea. In fact the closest we have found is the Tottenham Hotspur side of 1994-95 who netted hat-tricks in all three domestic competitions. Teddy Sheringham scored a hat-trick against Newcastle in the Premier League, Jurgen Klinsmann did it against Watford in the League Cup and Ronnie Rosenthal did it against Southampton in the FA Cup. But Spurs of course, were not in the Champions League - so Liverpool, thanks to Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun at least, are unique in that respect.

    TORRES ON TOP

Martin, Fernando Torres seems to really enjoy playing against the teams in the bottom half of the Premier League. What percent of his goals have come against teams in the bottom half? Regards Dave '****' Doyle

MARTIN SAYS: Well Dave, first of all Torres' treble against Middlesbrough took the Premier League hat-trick count to 10 this season, beating last year's total of nine and taking us ever closer to the Premier League 38-game season best of 16. He has now scored 15 Premier League goals as well and you are right to think he does enjoy playing against sides in the bottom half of the table. Of those 15 goals, 12 have come against sides who are, or were, in the bottom 10 - 80 per cent. Of Torres' 15 goals, only two have come away from Anfield; the strikes against Derby County on Boxing Day and in the first fixture against Middlesbrough on January 12th. Our good friends at Opta have kindly provided the following breakdown of his league goals.

    FERNANDO'S FOES
    Code:
    DATE GOALS OPPOSITION TOP/BOTTOM
    19th Aug 07 1 Chelsea Top
    1st Sep 07 2 Derby County Bottom
    7th Oct 07 1 Tottenham Hotspur Bottom
    10th Nov 07 1 Fulham Bottom
    2nd Dec 07 1 Bolton Wanderers Bottom
    22nd Dec 07 2 Portsmouth Top
    26th Dec 07 1 Derby County Bottom
    2nd Jan 08 1 Wigan Athletic Bottom
    12th Jan 08 1 Middlesbrough Bottom
    2nd Feb 08 1 Sunderland Bottom
    23rd Feb 08 3 Middlesbrough Bottom

Hehe...what a bizarre stat. Also weird how they only came via 2 players. All useless info, nonetheless.

      Stevie G against Luton anyone?

          The question was from me.

I was thinking about it over the weekend and couldn't think of anybody else so thought I'd email Sky.

I didn't think it would get published! I'm in print finally!
Twin boys - now arriving late August 2008.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!

What is the brill cream ratio for Ronaldo between his arse/head?

Is it the same ratio as smeared on Rooney's ring and against what opposition does he prefer top or bottom... I think he just loves bottom full stop...

Is it also a true story?

Its a common name. There are loads of us although I've never met another one.

I can however confirm I am this Andrew Barton.

I should try and do the Dave Gorman thing and meet a load of namesakes.
