Most people forget that we have invested a fortune in the reserves and U18s.

Hargreaves was 18m, Anderson 17m, they paid 5m for Tevez the other 5m was wages (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/mai.../sfnwes106.xml). So you need to adjust your numbers in both directions.

Recalc and lets see the result.,
As i said the £1.6m loan fee for Mascherano was last season. Anderson was £19m and Hargreaves was a fee starting from £20m according to a Bayern official. Fair enough regarding Tevez, i thought that was £5m per year.

As for Lucas and Benayoun, im 99% sure that Benayoun was only £5m and at the very most we paid £6m for Lucas.

Yes we paid a few million odd on youth players but so have Utd (in fact they paid a lot for a youngster that we were close to signing quite recently) so they're more or less going to cancel each other out.

Taking all that into account; at the very worst Utd spent £5m less than i said and again at the very worst we've paid £3m more, then Utd would have still spent more.

Still disagree on Hargreaves and Anderson. Just did a google and both were listed @ 17m!

BTW Leto was 2m alone and Insua was 1.6m/

Well the Hargreaves fee was stated by a Bayern official, as for Anderson ive seen figures saying it could rise above £20m.

As for Leto and Insua etc, like i said Utd have also been signing youngsters that i haven't included.

Off the top of my head they signed that African forward and the young lad Cofie for £1.5m. I don't follow all Utd so im not going to know all the youngsters they sign but we're not the only side thats buying up all the top youngsters across europe.

Also didn't we do some sort of swap for Insua with Palleta?

Other than the £5m extra i had for Tevez the rest of your stuff is opions.

The youth signings will more or less cancel each other out, the combined fee of Benayoun and Lucas is no more than £11m (£1m more than i said) and Anderson is £2m difference between what you say and what i say (im sure of Hargreaves). It was stated somewhere that Nani was offically £17.3m and that Utd paid around £2m more for Anderson than they did for Nani.

My initial Net spend for us will go up by £1m = £29m

And Utds down by a max of £7m = £34m

Like i said that is very much the worst case scenario (taking Anderson as £17m even though i think its more) and they've still spent more than us.

I commend you and your thoroughness

I still think I am right though I calc'd us as 70m in (widely reported) and 28m out (according to Rafa) + Momo (8m) = 34m.

Looks like a tie (even though I am sure we spent more on reserves)

                  Good debate

Anyway, details aside we've spent a darn sight more than we have ever done before. Good news.

In money terms we've spent more but when you take into account the CL run and the new tv deal i think we'd have spent just as much under Moores.

The problem is we're trying to play catch up to Utd who can more than match us in the transfer market.

Which is what is far more important

Now watch, some smart arse will almost certainly find some figures to show differently

Now all my lies are proved untrue

What tale shall serve me here among
                              Mine angry and defrauded young?

You can't really compare transfers now really can you?

I think most fees now are incentive related rather than straight up cash now. There is no way that United spent £34million on Anderson and Nani. I'm sure that Babel, Torres and Lucas would all be incentive based as well.

We have spent more than in recent seasons but its how you spend your money is vital. The money we have spent, has I believe mostly, been spent wisely although the benefit will be felt in future seasons with the signings of Babel and Lucas. We do however need to spend a lot more to compete with the top three to improve the squad that we have.
Twin boys - now arriving late August 2008.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!
