To rotate or not rotate, thats is the question

The old football maxim of never change a winning team has long since bitten the dust.

Until the mid 1990's the word rotation was never used in footballing terms. You never rested your best players. By & large you picked your best 11players if fit. At LFC, players regularly played 60 games in a season. Nobody suggested resting Keegan or Dalglish, Hansen or Hughes. Imagine telling Shanks you needed to miss a game because you felt tired.
This was in the days remember of 1 sub per team, were if you started a game, you generally finished it. You were unlikely to be subbed after 70 mins ( a la Crouch last season) to 'save' your energy for the next game. Travelling abroad is also much easier than in years gone by. In the 1970's & 80's trips to the old Eastern block were a nightmare. Nowadays even the more undeveloped European countries are a relative picnic to get to compared to Sofia, Kiev or Istanbul in the 70's & 80's.

Also players have never been fitter. The game is quicker nowadays, but fitness is so much better also. We never used to have special diets for footballers, full of carbohydrates & energy boosting foods. Shanks would often encourage weak players to eat steak & drink guiness to build up their strength. Nowadays, players are monitored to ensure they don't overdo the junk food & drink.

So given all this is rotation really needed. Can Stevie really not play every game in the way Souness used to. Does Bellamy need to miss the Derby so he's fresh for 2 games in 6 games. Rushie wasn't rested, & never looked jaded.

Will Rafa's rotation policy cost us our chance to win the league or is it our only chance to win the league. Will we be still going strong come March & April whilst United & Chelsea's players are dead on their feet from playing to many games early on in the season. Or will we be so far behind come the spring that unless Chelsea do a Devon Lock, it doesn't matter how fresh we our, chelsea will be out of sight.

I don't have any magic answers. time will tell. If Rafa is right, it will be a true masterstroke. If he's not it will be a highly frustrating season, full of might have beens. Will we look back to the 1st few games & think Rafa blew it with his continued rotation or will saving SG & co mean us sprinting clear as tired minds & bodies catch Chelsea & Man U up.

My heart tells me Rafa is wrong. My head says otherwise. I'm not saying we'll win the league but despite the lessons of the past maybe we do need to continually rotate to bring no. 19 home.

    thoughts please.

    I have absolutely no idea.

Intrinsically I don't like it, but I accept it has to happen. Rafa probably rotates too much, but I can see his way of thinking. He clearly wants two players of similarly high quality for every position, and would like to be able to draft people in and out without having any effect on our quality of play. Sadly I don't think we have that kind of quality in every position.

For what it's worth I do think we'll be flying come March, April and May. Our run-in is relatively 'easy', and if we're within, say, six or seven points we'll have a right chance.

Personally I don't like but in this day and age of football you need a big squad so I have to accept it although I'm not fond of it.

        I agree mate.
we must win our game in hand & then take at least the same points between now & say February as Chelsea & man U .If we do this then we will have a golden chance to win the league. Not only is our run in relatively easy but hopefully our freshness will come into play.
        Hers's hoping.

In modern football there is ovbviously a need to rotate, and I am in favour of rotation, however I am not in favour of the way that our team is being rotated thus far this season.

We have signed a lot of new players and they need time to gel.

In my opinion Rafa needs to select his strongest 15 or 16 players and rotate them, but only after his got what he believes to be his best team.

I also think that we should make no more that 2 changes per game, and that rotation should only start once we have a relatively settled team.

We definitely need 8 or 9 players who are going to start almost every match (barring injury and a once in a while rest), and in my opinion they should be:

          Reina
          Finnan
          Carragher
          Riise (when back)
          Gerrard
          Alonso
          Sissoko
          Kuyt

with Agger/Hyypia, Bellamy/Crouch/Fowler, and Pennant/Garcia/Gonzalez/Kewell (when back) being up for the rotation...
then of course some other subs like Aurelio, Paletta, Zenden, etc

Jamie Carragher has backed Rafael Benitez's policy of rotating his team to keep players fresh and said he totally understands why that is an important factor in modern day football.

The Liverpool defender points to the fact that squad rotation gave Benitez a lot of success when he was manager at Valencia and said the Liverpool players accept his ideas.

"Of course everyone wants to play," reasoned Carragher. "If you are not picked, then you are disappointed.

"But I think we are beginning to get the manager's ideas here, even if outsiders seem to offer criticism.

"You look at what he did at Valencia, and you can see that it works.

"He beat Real Madrid and Barcelona to the title by keeping his players fresh, and that is obviously what he wants to do here.

"If it means we are in a position to challenge later in the season, then maybe other people will start to understand too."
