    Rafa: Lets make it interesting

Rafael Benitez is confident Liverpool can continue to close the gap on the Premier League's pacesetters as they head into what promises to be a vital period in their season.
The Reds boss feels his side have taken some unfair criticism this year and believes they could yet prove their doubters wrong if they can maintain their winning momentum in key league matches with Manchester United, Everton and Arsenal.

"How near we finish to the top now will be interesting," said Benitez. "We have been criticised this season, but let us see where we are in three or four weeks.

"We have important games and if we win them we will be a lot closer. If we can beat Manchester United we will be closer to the top, and that will give us more confidence.

"If we beat Everton after that then we will be closer still. Maybe, maybe we can be closer if we do not talk too much about it.

"Do we have a point to prove? Maybe, but only if we can keep winning three points."

If the Reds can extend their winning run to eight matches with victory at Old Trafford they will go into the Merseyside derby with Everton confident of putting some daylight between themselves and their neighbours in fifth place.

But Benitez is not interested in looking too far ahead and is instead focused on leading the Reds to a first win at Old Trafford since 2004.

"We now have a very tough spell," he said. "Everyone kept saying that because of that we had to win our three home league games with West Ham, Newcastle and now Reading. We have now done that.

"Now we have really difficult games and we needed these seven wins beforehand.

"We have five very hard games, three with Arsenal plus Everton and Manchester United away next week. We will only think of each one as it arrives, you cannot start to worry about what is ahead.

"The first one is the most important. If we can keep our momentum then it will be easier going into the second one. We must not waste our time thinking too far ahead."

"We started the season playing well, winning a lot of games, scoring plenty of goals and we were unbeaten in the league until December.

"Still we have only lost three league games, our problem has been drawing too many and we are aware of that.

"If we had won just three of those drawn matches things would be very different."

I am not sure of how Benitez coped with the other big clubs in Spain but he has been disappointing in the Premiership. We win all three and we have a shout for the title, get three from nine and its fourth. These run of games will test Benitez's tactical ability in the Premiership and the strength and character of the squad.

I remember his Valencia side clawing a 12 points deficit on Real and won the league right at the death. All the teams he's built have finished the season very strongly.

I think he's got to grasp with what's needed in the league and it's been evident from the word go at the start of the season. We had a poor run, add to that the fact that we had boardroom wrangles all over the place.

Now is the time to set this right. Win at Old Trafford and I'll believe we can do it. If not this season (which is highly hypothetical), next season will be our year.

This is going to sound very hollow if we get beaten on Sunday.

Yeah, like many of your statements.

You need some sort of positive therapy methinks.

We've really got to go for the jugular on Sunday, absolutely no point in playing defensively for a draw.

            Attack! Attack! Attack!

We won't be going for all out attack that's for sure, we'll get killed for doing that at Old Trafford.

I expect Carra to play at right back for this game, in the same configuration we had against Inter. We should nick out a win and if we're really controlling things in midfield, we could go for the jugular.

The result is the most important thing now. A scrappy 1-0 win will suit me.

I'm never optimistic going into Scum games. They are far too jammy. Goal before half time or full time they get. Its ****ing appalling on our behalf. I expect us to lose.

Nullify the threat then slowly start turning the screw - if we go gungho the chances are we'll lose

To be fair to Rafa, he doesn't come out this strong very often. More importantly though, whe he does he is normally right.

I like the sound of Rafa lately, he definitely sounds like he is back to his best, confidence wise.

It is a big game this week. If we somehow manage to win it will make everyone believe. In what? I don't know but beating the Mancs at Old Trafford would definitely cause a stir in my world.
Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24

Yep. We've been burnt so many times that optimism seems foolish. Still i am a fool so here's hoping!

I reckon he knows what it takes now. He's won the mind games with the owners, almost has the team he wants and the tactics are pretty good/flexible.

Next season is the one he will truly be judged on. Be patient and let it happen.

Good post. He is building a dynasty. As far as mind games go, Rafa wins them all. He is way ahead, that's why they all hate him so much.

                            Ok, fair enough how about:

                            Cautiously defend! Attack! Attack!

Not got the same ring to it as a chant though unfortunately
