Arbeloa shocked by 'inhumane' start to life under Benitez

Arbeloa shocked by 'inhumane' start to life under Benitez
By JOHN EDWARDS - More by this author » Last updated at 22:52pm on 27th March 2008

Alvaro Arbeloa has opened up on the strict regime at Liverpool and claimed he had to endure an 'inhumane' first few weeks before adapting to the demands of manager Rafa Benitez.

The 25-year-old full back has underlined his worth since arriving from Deportivo La Coruna for £2.5million 14 months ago and earned his first cap for Spain in Wednesday's 1-0 win over Italy.

As he prepared for Sunday's Merseyside derby with Everton at Anfield, though, he admitted Benitez's tough approach in training had caught him by surprise.

'I didn't know where I was in my first week with Liverpool,' he said. 'It went badly, and the image I remember from those early days is of the manager criticising everything I did, from the way I did some basketball practice to how I played my football.

'My first fortnight at the club was inhumane, but I am grateful to him now for filling me in on how the team works. It is a well-run club and I found it easy to adapt to their way of working.

'People say the manager is grumpy but I have only seen that once. He is serious-minded, though, and I can assure you nobody enjoys themselves during the training sessions. There is a great seriousness about them because that is where we go to work.'

Off the pitch, though, Arbeloa has found the regime more forgiving. 'Things are different over here compared to Spain,' he said. 'Star players can go out and have a beer and nobody will cause them any trouble.'

Arbeloa described how Jamie Carragher rules Liverpool's dressing room while Steven Gerrard is the team's inspiration on the field.

'Jamie is the true boss in the changing room,' he said. 'He orders everyone around and yells a lot but, to be fair, he has a CV equal to Fernando Hierro's for Real Madrid and the Spain national team. He sees and hears everything and keeps us informed about what is happening.

'Gerrard is also important. He is like Zinedine Zidane — a genius who doesn't like to be the centre of attention. He is the first to make runs, to lend a hand or to get stuck in when necessary.'

Arbeloa conceded Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo leads the running for Footballer of the Year but loyally declared that his countryman Fernando Torres deserved the prize.

'Ronaldo's confidence level is so high everything he tries seems to come off and he is a step ahead of everyone else at the moment,' said Arbeloa.

'Alex Hleb of Arsenal and Chelsea's Joe Cole have also caught my eye but Torres has been massive for us. He has created a lot of goals for himself and is on a par with the best and I am sure he will be voted Footballer of the Year ahead of Ronaldo.

'He is an idol who has earned his stripes, particularly at Anfield, where he has scored most of his goals.'

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Good insight. I like how Rafa keeps everyone on a strict hands on basis around training.

Arbs is a great squad player for us and you can't knock him for the price we paid. Yet mates who support other teams just think "he's another one of Benitez's bad buys" ????

        Yep, it's so ****ing ignorant.

I have a rather bitter Spurs mate and, seemingly in response to me having a pop at Chimbonda once or twice, has targeted Arbeloa. He's repeatedly referred to him as "one of Benitez's many ten-a-penny Spics" and texted me during the United game to tell me he was ****. Again.

Good interview, that...although surely the players do actually enjoy training??! I get what he means, of course, but I'd be worried if genuinely none of them enjoyed it.

I think back to one of, if not his first, games for us - against Barce at the Nou Camp. Fantastic performance, really helped keep Ronaldinho and Messi in check. I bet none of my mates saw that game. Mind you, one of 'em in particular rates Chris Samba so of course, his opinion on Arbs therefore is null and void

Yeah I've heard that a few times.

I just bite my lip, knowing they rarely if ever watch us anyway, and don't really know what they're talking about when it comes to LFC.

Another one I've heard is "I don't rate Finnan," and how many people here think Riise is better than the former?

Enjoy training? Well, if you were put through grueling sessions by Benitez you might not enjoy the sessions they put you through. The players might enjoy the banter during training but the sessions might kill them.

People remember Riise for his 'rockets' which is a shame because he isn't a good defender which is his primary role for the team.

Exactly; and so loads of people I know reckon he's our 3rd best player.

Besides, when was the last time he scored?

I would hope he is referring to how hard, structured and intense it is. So it should be cos these blokes sure get paid well for what they do.

You friend is clearly a loon but on the other hand Arbeloa needs to step up if he is to become a first choice player for us. IMO one of him or Finnan have to go this summer and a better right back bought in (same at left back where I would let Riise go). Personally I would keep the more versatile and younger Arbeloa as he brings the ball into midfield better and is a more versatile player, however his inability to cross consistently is a worry and he needs to be stronger at times.

In terms of the training I think the pictures we saw when we went through that very dodgy patch of form indicates that if nothing else some of the players enjoy parts of it. I always wonder about interviews like this from players used to foreign media whether they are simply saying the equivalent of the platitudes that most English players trot out but those expected by a different journalistic mind set.

Odd that both he and Babel have talked about training intensity and preparation recently.
