Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said: "I was off the pitch quite quickly and up the tunnel. I wasn't aware of any altercation.

"If Rafael Benitez said he heard it and it was nothing, then who am I to disagree with him?"

    Precisely. You rodent-featured delusional gimp.

Just when I discovered the meaning of life, they changed it

Thought he responded quite well to the stick. Things like the bottle that was thrown on the pitch, only for him to pick it up and take a swig out of it. If his finishing had been sharper it could have been a great night for him

          BELLAMY IN TUNNEL BUST-UP
Craig slapped in Toon tunnel ruck PREMIERSHIP: LIVERPOOL 2 NEWCASTLE 0
          By Simon Bird

CRAIG BELLAMY had a tunnel bust-up with Stephen Carr as tempers flared at Anfield last night - after Xabi Alonso scored one of the greatest goals in Anfield history.

Liverpool's victory, capped by Alonso's 65-yard effort, erupted after the final whistle with an angry confrontation between Republic of Ireland defender Carr and fiery former teammate Bellamy.

Carr cuffed Bellamy during a shouting and shoving match, and police and stewards intervened.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez confirmed there had been an incident that "was over in a couple of seconds." He said: "I could hear some shouting - I could not understand it."

The incident, which referee Mark Halsey could report to the Football Association, marred the end to a physical encounter sealed by Alonso's remarkable lob of Newcastle keeper Steve Harper in the 79th minute. Dutch star Dirk Kuyt had opened the scoring in the first half, slotting home from 10 yards out for his first goal for the club.

Benitez was delighted with the win that kick-starts the club's Premiership campaign.

He said: "We showed we can play good football, create chances and score some goals.

"Maybe we deserved one or two more. Kuyt needed to score. I am happy because one of the strikers has scored.

"Alonso played well. I was going to tell him off because I was watching Gerrard running out wide and was disappointed he didn't pick him out!

          "But I congratulated him.

"It was like his goal at Luton last season but better.

"He likes to do this in training."
