I feel sorry for Crouch but Kuyt has made that position his for this season anyways. Kuyt does so much and I think if we get an attacking right back next season he will be a great player for us. Just imagine him torturing the right side all day with a proper attacking right back bombing up the wings. We all agree he disrupts there defense with his work rate, if we had someone to properly attack that then I think it would work well.

He just needed a big boost to his confidence. He's slowly coming good right now. He's an excellent player. Really good buy by Rafa. He will score more goals next season.Originally posted by Woobus View PostI feel sorry for Crouch but Kuyt has made that position his for this season anyways. I agree his workrate & defensive work was great but I think we need a player who will be more of a threat going forward in the 2nd leg as we won't be as bogged down in our half as much as we were tonight. Yes he was involved in the goal (I thought it came off Flamini last though), but nevertheless attacking wise he's just not up to it. Look at that chance we had at the end when they were completely & utterly exhausted, he had no clue with what to do with the ball.Originally posted by fredo View PostKuyt was magnificent today.
A fantastic team player.
I'm not having a go I just think he's not good enough going forward but he's perfect for away games like tonight though...Last edited by Nick77; 02-04-08, 10:14 PM.Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

Mate, show me a player who works as hard and who has as much an all round game than Dirk. There ain't many I can assure you. He still scored. Exhausted or not, he offers a great deal to this team when he's on form.Originally posted by Nick77 View PostI agree his workrate & defensive work was great but I think we need a player who will be more of a threat going forward in the 2nd leg. I would agree with that, but I would keep Kuyt for the tight European matches and the matches away when you need some fight upfront. No doubt some matches we need more skill there but I still think Kuyt is a great bonus in some matches. Specially Euro away.Originally posted by Nick77 View PostI agree his workrate & defensive work was great but I think we need a player who will be more of a threat going forward in the 2nd leg as we won't be as bogged down in our half as much as we were tonight. I am not in any way having a go at Dirk or refering to todays perfomance before people get a ock stand, but when we play a system with 2 defensive midfielders and a back 4 I do not think we should be relying on the person filling his position in the team to be more efficient at defending then attacking.
I think he does a good job for the team but as stated above the 4 attacking players should be just that attacking not defending.

We contained one of the most attacking teams in europe at home, Kuyt played a big part in that many times tonight. Scored 6 important goals in europe as well and had one of his best games for the club so cant see why he wouldnt be picked in Euro matches? Rafa knows how to win CL matches specially away, clearly he thinks Kuyt is part of it.Originally posted by Angry Dan View PostI think he does a good job for the team but as stated above the 4 attacking players should be just that attacking not defending.

Thats an overly simplistic position. The players need to be able to adapt to the game as it unfolds. Dirk can do that, that's to his credit.Originally posted by Angry Dan View PostI am not in any way having a go at Dirk or refering to todays perfomance before people get a ock stand, but when we play a system with 2 defensive midfielders and a back 4 I do not think we should be relying on the person filling his position in the team to be more efficient at defending then attacking.

As I stated I am not talking about tonights performance, I do think that a 7/4 defensive split is enough and if the 4 were attacking as a unit that would have enough impact to restrict the opositions play.Originally posted by Woobus View PostWe contained one of the most attacking teams in europe at home, Kuyt played a big part in that many times tonight. The question is good enough at what. For sure as a pure attacking force he's a squad player, but I think he is doing great at everything Rafa is asking of him.Originally posted by anfieldanfield View PostUltimately he's no where near good enough, but fair play to the lad, he was superb tonight. The Crushing Machine MKII

He is far more effective at defending and breaking up the oposition play (be it his natural game or match instructions) than he is at attacking. I believe that the person filling his slot in the team should be biased more towards attacking then defending. I am not suggesting that we should play with 4 people constantly in the opositions half with no regard to defending.Originally posted by El Jefecito View PostThats an overly simplistic position. You may have a diferent opinion, fair enough that is why the game is interesting.
