Ex-Liverpool youngster Sean Highdale to represent Great Britain at the Paralympics in Rio
A former Liverpool teenager will represent Great Britain at the Paralympic Games this summer in Brazil.
Sean Highdale had played for England at Under-16 level and for Liverpool Under-18s but was seriously injured in a car crash that killed two of his friends in 2008.
Highdale was just 17 at the time and had to go through lengthy physical rehabilitation.
Having been was part of Liverpool’s 2007 FA Youth Cup-winning side alongside Jay Spearing, now at Bolton Wanderers, Highdale plays as a central midfielder; he is now part of a 14-man squad that will represent Great Britain in seven-a-side football.
“I’m really happy that my place on the team is confirmed,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “Like many of my teammates, this will be my first Paralympic Games but I’m so excited for the opportunity and it’s such an honour to represent your country on the international stage.
“I hope we can make everyone back at home proud, and I’m so grateful for all of the support that I’ve had to help me get here.”
Former Liverpool teammate Nathan Ecclestone was among those to congratulate Highdale.
Captain Michael Barker, who is just one of three players in the squad not making their Olympic debut, believes the squad is as good as ever.
“It’s such an honour to be selected to represent ParalympicsGB for the third time,” said Barker, who was a trainee at Everton as a youngster.
“We’ve come a long way since I made my debut in Beijing back in 2008 and the squad is probably the strongest that it’s ever been.
“The support that we had during London 2012 was incredible too and I want to see it continue through to Rio – it inspires us to give everything we’ve got when we step onto the pitch.”
This will be Barker’s third such tournament, having played in Beijing in 2008 and worn the captain’s armband in the London Olympics in 2012.If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Strange thing to say, I'm sure he'd probably pick a proper chance at Liverpool, ending up at Accrington Stanley and his friends surviving over those millions...

It hadn't been mentioned about his pay out so I mentioned it. He was 17 with no guarantee of a career and loads of potential falls by the way side. A multi million pound deal seems mad.Originally posted by wongers View Post**** sake there's always one
Who know how it would have turned out, like that Michael Johnson lad hottest talent in the country to being a young millionaire lad drink/mental health issues to now owning restaurants/estate agents when he should in the prime of his career. No guarantees in football, just look at £50 million quid Sterling on 200 grand a week.

I don't think you'd weigh up the probability of making it when it comes to serious accident claims! He was robbed of 'potential' earnings so insurance coughs up.Originally posted by Liverpool View PostIt hadn't been mentioned about his pay out so I mentioned it. I'm pretty sure he'd swap his millions for the chance to have a normal life and aim to be a success at Liverpool. After all, you don't get that far at 17 if you're not driven by personal success. Was muß, das muß.
