    Number 7?

I've never been a fan of "retiring" shirt numbers as they sometimes do in american sports but maybe it's something that could be put into practice over here as a mark of respect to legends of the past. When you consider previous wearers of the Number 7 shirt and compare them to our most recent ie Kewell and Smicer, it starts to make sense. Or maybe let a player earn the right to wear the prestigious shirt numbers over a period of time?

i see where you are coming from but then we would have players with ridiculous numbers on their back..

Man City and Lyon did it for Foe though..

        16.48931?

The days of 1-11 are long gone anyway. Besides, rarely has a player earnt the right to legendary status to the extent that thier shirt might get retired until a worthy successor has been found.

Example: Reina is possibly the equal of Brucie or Clemence so he should wear the number 1 blouse. Fowler probably earnt the right to Rush's old blouse and in a year or two Torres could probably rightfully inherit Fowler's number.

Wonder how good a number 7 Kewell would have been had he stayed fit all the time he was here, if Rafa is any judge of ability, a good one, judging by his use of Harry in big games.

The guy gets stick for being injured. I don't get that one bit.

The logical thing to do would be to give it to Voronin.

Exactly - you "wonder" how good he might have been. That's considerably different, regardless of the excuses or circumstances for not doing the business over a reasonable period of time.

Give it to the tranny (Carheex) so that he'll put it in his wardrobe and cherish it forever.

A stupid idea. A shirt is a shirt.

Imagine signing someone and saying to them, 'you are wearing number 45. Sorry but we've had a think about it and you are not as good as anyone we have had before, that okay?'.

WHo decides who the all time greats were? Should Dalglish have worn 7 or Rush 9 when there were great players before them? Nostalgia, thats all.

I'm with theriotact, they're just numbers. At the end of the day it's the players we remember.

                      Isn't 25 Reina's preferred number though?

I think we should retire number 6 when Riise leaves, it's obviously jinxed.

Or we could just aim for finding a player good enough to wear the shirt.

I'm not really arsed about the numbers thing but, given the choice, I would opt for a return to 1-11.

Our current side would look like this, for me...

                            1. Reina
                            2. Arbeloa
                            3. Aurelio
                            4. Mascherano
                            5. Skrtel
                            6. Carragher
                            7. Kuyt
                            8. Alonso
                            9. Torres
                            10. Gerrard
                            11. Babel
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
