Liverpool Reserves crashed to a humiliating 6-1 defeat at the hands of Marine in tonight's Senior Cup final.

Marine hitman Rupert Frecklethwaite bagged four and an own goal apiece from Jordy Brouwer and Krisztian Nemeth saw the Reds 6-0 down at half-time, before Mikel San Jose's breathtaking 45 yard scissor kick provided scant consolation in the second half for the young Reds.

        More to follow.

A late penalty from Peter Cumiskey condemned Liverpool Reserves to a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the Senior Cup final at College Road.
The veteran forward stepped up and coolly sent Peter Gulacsi the wrong way on 84 minutes after Ronald Huth was ajudged to have handled in the area.

It summed up a disappointing night for Gary Ablett's side who looked tired and fatigued throughout with Marine running out worthy winners.

Clearly you did not hear what he said yesterday. He wants his players back fresh next season and thus will give some guys a rest over the next 3 weeks

I didnt hear that but be that as it may, if they're going to Euro 2008, they wont be that fresh next season.

Aye but atleast some of them will get a bit of a rest before it. I would assume that the likes of Fabregas wont play much over next 3 games. He must be shattered after the season he's had

Prove you’re good enough - Benitez

RAFA BENITEZ today told Liverpool's fringe players to use the remaining games of the season to prove they deserve to remain at Anfield – or face the prospect of being sold in the summer.

The Liverpool boss has already started his squad rebuilding programme for next season with Swiss international right-back Philipp Degen having agreed terms on a Bosman free transfer from Borussia Dortmund.

Although the deal has not yet been finalised it is close to completion and the 25-year-old is expected to be the first of sev- eral new recruits as Benitez looks to add further quality to his squad in a bid to challenge for the Premiership title.

But, with a number of players set to arrive, the current squad will have to be trimmed and Benitez is challenging those who haven't featured regularly this season to prove that they have a future at the club.

He said: "There are some players who know that they need to show quality and they need to show character if they want to stay at a top club like Liverpool.

"That means the last few games are a challenge for them and they need to take what opportunities come their way."

Benitez is also ready to give members of Gary Ablett's championship winning reserve side a chance to show what they can do at first team level.

Damien Plessis made his full debut against Arsenal recently and the French youngster is likely to be included in the squad for tomorrow's meeting with Birmingham at St Andrews.

With Fabio Aurelio having been ruled out for at least three weeks, Benitez may also include promising Argentinian left back Emiliano Insua, in Liverpool's travelling party for a fixture which could see the Reds seal their place in the top four.

Hungarian forward Krisztian Nemeth and Spanish centre back Mikel San Jose have an outside chance of being involved.

Having built up an eight point advantage over Everton with just three matches remaining, Benitez is able to experiment, while also assessing his squad.

But he has no intention of allowing Liverpool to take their foot off the gas at this stage of the season.

He said: "I want to guarantee fourth place as soon as possible because that is very important.

"We have a good squad so that means I am able to use different players.

"A lot of people are talking about Plessis, Insua, Nemeth and San Jose because they have been playing well, but we will go with a strong team. It is easier to use the young players if I am also able to use good players alongside them.

"I have been watching these players in training for months. They were training with the first team yesterday so we do not have any worries about them.”

Nice to see that these 4 youngsters have had the chance to train with the first team. It must mean that Rafa is considering using them in some way in the not too distant future. It'll also be great experience for them to test themselves out against top quality players.
