    Reserves vs. Villa

Anybody else going to this tomorrow night? Should be a good night for a fiver (booked in advance) and the club has waived the booking fee. Tenner on the door!

The lads deserve a good turn out for the excellent season they've had, so I hope the place is full. And it'll be a great chance to see some of the youngsters playing in a pressurised game. I'm looking forward to it.

Reckon Pennant/Crouch et al will get thrown in there to make sure of the win? If Kewell is fit he will be right in there. Likes a final does our Harry

I hope Pennant etc don't play in this. The youngsters who have played all season deserve to get a chance to win the "final".

It is also good for them to be in as many games that have some meaning as possible. There really is no benefit in playing established players to my mind - next year the reserves trophy will be forgotten and what is important is how many of the reserves have developed into players in our first team or that we have been able to sell for good money.

Think they said last week that Pacheco will be away on international duty which is a shame - would have loved to see him & Nemeth up top at Anfield

Gary Ablett has challenged his reserve side to whet the appetites of Liverpool supporters during tonight's play-off final with Aston Villa at Anfield.
Having won the northern league in style, the Reds' second string will take on Kevin MacDonald's southern winners in a battle to be crowned the best reserve side in the country - and it's a game you can watch live on LFC TV from 7pm tonight.

With several youngsters having tasted first team experience already this season, Ablett believes tonight is the perfect stage for more of his players to give a bumper Anfield crowd a tantalising glimpse into the future.

"There's no bigger incentive for the players to put on a show tonight because they're playing at Anfield in front of a big crowd for a trophy," said Ablett.

"We want them to put on a performance and get the fans talking about them and maybe anticipating bigger things from them next season. We've already seen Emiliano Insua, Damien Plessis and Nabil El Zhar feature in Rafa's plans this season and hopefully there will be more next year.

"It's a big game, the biggest of the season for our boys, but it's one we targeted at the start of the year and one we hoped we'd be taking part in. Now we're here, it's about performing and getting the right result.

"The unfortunate thing from our point of view is that we have a number of players missing through injury and so we're down to our last 15 or 16 lads.

"Jay Spearing, Ray Putterill, Ryan Crowther and Daniel Ayala are all injured while Gerardo Bruno is away with Spain at the European Championships in Turkey. It would have been nice to go into the game with everyone available but it's not to be. We have great faith in the boys who will come in that they can do a good job for us tonight."

Having comfortably won the southern league this season, Ablett is expecting a tough test against a Villa side who may well field players with first team experience.

"We don't know what sort of team they will send up here, whether it will be one of a similar age to ours or one with a bit more experience, but we'll cope with whatever it is," added the boss.

"We've seen a DVD of their game with Chelsea and we had them watched against Arsenal so we know a bit about them. They're very strong and aggressive, they will press high up the pitch but they'll also look to play football as well.

"They're a typical Kevin MacDonald side and he will have them up and ready for the game, there's no doubt about that.

"On the night it's going to be about what we do. We'll take the boys onto the pitch for a good 20-25 minutes before the game to get them used to the surroundings because this is a big night for them and we want them to relax and be able to play their normal game."

If it's only 1 leg, which it appears to be - how come it is at Anfield?

I think they just take turns. One year the Northern winners host it, the next the Southern winners.

I wonder if Berger will play for Villa reserves?

Yeah I'm going. Looking forward to it. I'm going with possibly the only Irish Aston Villa fan who lives in Liverpool. He jumped at the chance to sit on the Kop, they all do.

Doubt those three 'first teamers' will play, Kewell maybe, but as people have said the game should be for the young lads.

Quite an experienced Villa side apparently, Stuart Taylor, Shaun Maloney, Wayne Routledge. Should be good.

What has impressed me the most about our reserves is that they are all young and fighting to break into the first team.

When we won the reserve league in 2000, the majority of that team were bit part players with no prospect of making the step up, or first team players keeping fit.

The academy really has turned around in the last few seasons, something we desperately needed. These kids have done exceptionally well and deserve a lot of support tonight.

A sign of a top side is the performance of their reserves. Remember the years we used to dominate the world? Take a look at the years we won our reserve league:
                              1968-69, 1969-70, 1970-71, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1974-75, 1975-76, 1976-77, 1978-79, 1980-81, 1981-82, 1983-84, 1984-85, 1989-90 (14 titles)

During that same period these are the years we won the league:
                              1972–73, 1975–76, 1976–77, 1978–79, 1979–80, 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1985–86, 1987–88, 1989–90 (11 titles)

The two best teams in Liverpool was not a wind-up by the great man, it was a fact.
"The definition of insanity is not running into the same wall again and again; it's expecting a different result every time you do it."
