Today`s 'El Mundo Deportivo` carries a rumour that Chelsea are already negotiating with Real Madrid`s splendid defender, Sergio Ramos.
Apparently last night the defender`s brother (and his agent) René Ramos met in Madrid with Roman Abramovich himself. The occasion was the celebration of European Basketball`s 'Final Four` tournament.
During the meeting (and we are only reporting what 'El Mundo Deportivo` is saying) Roman slapped a huge €70 million bid on the table for Sergio Ramos to join the Chelsea defence. Apparently €7 million per year (net of taxes) in personal terms have also been offered and agreed with the player and agent. That`s quite an increase on Ramos` current contract, a belt-tightening €3 million.
Sergio Ramos is waiting for a contract renewal at Madrid, which has already tied down 3 of their biggest names (Raùl, Iker Casillas, Guti) on what have been dubbed 'contracts for life`. Apparently this renewal was also promised to Ramos before the end of the season.
'El Mundo Deportivo` adds that the Madrid President, Ramón Calderón, is aware of what is going on, and is not opposed to this operation: the sums involved would make Sergio Ramos not only the most expensive defender in the world, at £55 million, he would break the previous record for any player, Zinedine Zidane. Calderón is said to believe that this would placate the fans. Especially if this money would be used to purchase other star players (such as Cristian Ronaldo.
So, are Chelsea really in for Sergio Ramos?
We don`t think so. Is the key point the fact that Sergio Ramos is looking for a contract renewal at Madrid? Just as the negotiations seem not to be taking place, his agent meets with Roman Abramovich himself, who just 'happens` to be in Madrid? In fact we`d be very interested to know if Roman was actually in Madrid yesterday. And since when does Roman himself conduct transfer negotiations? We think this is a ploy to remind Madrid of his worth. It wouldn`t be the first time that Chelsea have been instrumentalised this way.
One thing is for certain: Sergio Ramos is an excellent defender. He can play anywhere along the backline, but tends to be most comfortable … as a right-back. By coincidence, that is an area where Chelsea will be looking to strengthen the squad. As well as being excellent defensively, he is also great going forward, marauding the flanks and being particularly dangerous on headers. Indeed, he`s scored 3 goals this season. He`s also scored 4 goals for Spain, where he has become just about the first name on the teamsheet since making his debut almost 3 years ago. He was 19 then, and at only 22 now, he undoubtedly is one of the very best defenders in the world today. If Madrid are currently celebrating their second successive league title, it`s partly due to Ramos.
In fact, it`s not even the first time that Ramos has been linked to Chelsea, his name comes up (usually rather vaguely) in the summer.
We also have to mention that there is another side to Ramos: he is a dirty player, and he has received 13 yellow cards and 3 reds this season, which is about average per season for Ramos. Can Chelsea stand for such indiscipline?
If Chelsea were in for him, and he could be persuaded to clean up his game (and please, to cut his trademark hair) we would have solved the perennial right-back problem. However, there is another reason why we think this rumour is rubbish: it appears in pro-Barça paper El Mundo Deportivo, today. Today Barcelona travel to Madrid in a very bad mood. Madrid won the League on Sunday, and for tonight`s (meaningless) League game, Barcelona will have to perform the guard of honour to Madrid. Much soul-searching has gone on in Barça about this, with the other Catalan paper ('Sport`) encouraging fans to switch on the TV 5 minutes after the game begins so as not to have to witness this 'humiliation`.
What better way to get back to Madrid than to stir up trouble by suggesting that one of their star players is going to Chelsea?
He's doing well, not spending money, ain't he...................
wum for sure - prob a manc too having read some of the posts in the crouch thread - his grasp of the english language just wouldnt be the best
"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.
"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."
