There are different types of "physical presence" and having an enormous great spindly centre forward, no matter how lightweight, is an unusual prospect for any defender.

      My suggestions would be that:
a/ On corners especially we seem to try a different thing each time - almost like the taker is looking to hit a specific player. For me putting the ball into a consistent area should be the default, the variation can come from movement in the box most of the time. There is no harm in changing to exploit an opponents weakness but it should be the exception rather than the rule.
b/ We seem to lack confidence in what we do - hence to many short corners. I feel that a more consistent approach as outlined above would help this.
c/ We don't attack the back post enough and when we do it tends to be weak headers who do it. Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown and all of the Villa centrebacks seem to make a special effort to attack these areas and as a consequence seem to get a lot of joy.
d/ I sometimes wonder if the attacking and defending of set pieces feed off one another. We seem not to do the things that seem obvious to many other teams such as putting a player near the keeper. I wonder whether we learn to attack teams who zonally mark as that is what we play against in training? Not sure how this would differ and is more a speculation than a real theory.
e/ United for example seem to have a clear policy that it is okay for one of their forward players to drop deep to get the ball on the edge of the area, we seem to leave this to Alonso. I'm not convinced that he is quick enough to react often enough to the ball coming out or the sort of player best suited to taking those opportunities (although at times he certainly has shown he can).
