From previous posts on here, I believe Rafa tried to buy Degen when he was at Valencia, which means he's been following the guy for some time. Much though we'd all love to be able to go spending £15m on a full back, we've got to get out of that mindset imo, we simply can't compete with ManU and Chelsea's spending, so we have to try to do it another way. We need players with the right mentality, if Rafa thinks this fella has it then we've no reason (yet) to think otherwise.

Agreed, but that wasn't just a 'lad', that was the accomplished international and highly regarded Marcus Babbel signed from Champions League winners Bayern Munich.

With the greatest of respect this type of signing (Degen that is) is a complete unknown for almost all of us, therefore we should respect the guy and at least afford him the opportunity to show us what he is all about.

However, by targeting this level of player we have shown again how far behind in terms of resources we really are. As has been stated, Chelsea sign a 16m RB, Utd are after Alves who will cost at least 20m.

As I said, we should give him a chance, but TBH I quickly getting used to the idea that we will only be fighting for a CL spot again next season and hope to have another good CL run.

It was only a year or two after Chelsea signed Ferreira for mega money that we signed Arbeloa for very little and look how that's worked out. I believe Rafa can win us the PL without a level playing field, it's just going to take time and patience.

Maybe Rafa thinks that with Finnan, Arbeloa and now Degen, £20m+ would be better spent further up the pitch?

I just get the gut feeling that this type of signing is not the first target for Rafa, but more of a compromise so the limited bucks G&H provide (via another loan no doubt) can be spent elsewhere.
