    Rafa speaks no

Rafa Benitez admits winning the Premier League with Liverpool would be the biggest achievement of his illustrious career.
In an exclusive end of season review aired for the first time on LFC TV at 7.30pm GMT tonight, the Spanish tactician claims ending our long wait for the title would outstrip clinching the European Cup in his first season on Merseyside.

Asked if it would also rank above breaking the stranglehold of Real Madrid and Barcelona by topping La Liga with Valencia, Benitez said: "Yes, clearly it's more difficult here than in Spain because the top sides spend big, big money.

"We will try to do our best and the key for me is to not talk about the title. The key is to be near the top, to be contenders. If we stay close then I think we are capable of doing it.

"It is an option, for sure. We know our weaknesses and our strengths. We know where we need to improve, so we'll try to build a new team looking at these things."

Though reluctant to raise expectations, Benitez admits lessons have been learnt from this season – both in the lean spell which followed Christmas and the fantastic run of the final three months.

He said: "We showed character at the end and that's really important. We showed that in difficult times we can be good and win games.

"As a manager, it was also important for me to see how the people around the team reacted to everything.

"When you talk about a winning mentality and winning trophies, you need to see the character of your people. The season was very good in terms of knowing the people.

"We have analysed a lot of things this year. For example, we have conceded a lot of goals from set pieces. We need to understand why because the season before we conceded six, now it's 16, yet we're doing more or less the same things. We can improve in this area.

"We also need to keep the team scoring in open play while at the same time improving a little bit in defence. We have been really good in defence for three of four years, but I think we need to improve a little bit if we want to be at the top of the table."

With the dust still settling on 2007-08, many are enjoying a well-earned break from the game until it all starts again in July – but not Benitez.

For him the hard work starts now, both in terms of signing new players and assessing which 'small details' could take his team to another level next term.

"It's always the same: during the season you must do your job with the players you have and afterwards, in the summer, you need to do your job with the staff," said Benitez.

"It's really important to sign the right players with the right mentality – a winning mentality. You want players who are desperate to come here and win trophies.

"We started last season well and when we had Agger we were playing well. But, after all the draws, it was important to regain the confidence. In the end we were playing really well, winning games in a row and producing good football.

"You could see the understanding between Gerrard and Torres, but other players were also scoring goals. As I've said, we have the spine for next season and now we need to add players in certain positions."
"The definition of insanity is not running into the same wall again and again; it's expecting a different result every time you do it."

"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

There's the difference between 11 points behind and being in with a real shout.

Losing Agger really was the changing point in our season, we were playing so well up to that point then had to change our style of play. If only we had of got Heinze it could have been so different, mind you we wouldnt have bought Skrtel who made such a big difference when he joined.

11 points dosnt seem that far away but in truth we are alot further away than people think,1 thing that hasnt improved since 05 is consistancy,we are still makeing the same school boy errors we did way back then, the constant giveing the ball away the stupid missed place pass the failure to kill off teams and walk away with 1 point when for 92 mins we should of had 3 stupid stuff like that..and no matter who we buy unless them mistakes and consistancy are sorted out you can forget about bein champs and we will be known as the 4th best in the prem and a good cup side.....

the manks and chealski under jose could field any team weak or strong and if it wasnt there day they could grind out a result us on the other hand even with a strong side out it all depends on what liverpool team turns up to play,1 saturday it will be world beaters and then the next saturday same team but they dont even deserve to wear my shirt let alone the they get paid to wear and this is the difference between champs and chumps.....

One good thing about Rafa is that he always makes the right noises and always learns his lessons. Again, this summer he is addressing issues which had me pulling my hair out (getting the right players in certain positions and set piece defending).

Let's hope he can get the players he needs (rather than second choicers) and we're closer to the top next season.

Do we really have a spine? I think we're severly lacking in defence now TBH. We don't have a single "established" defender who's on top of his game. I'm not saying they're poor or even average, just either young and inexperienced, or good but past their best. Where is our Terry & Carvalho, or Ferdinand and Vidic? I hope Skrytel and Agger come good for us.

Central midfield we have Mascher and Gerrard (possibly), but again no proven, established and most importantly effective wingers...at all. Again out wide we have either potential (Babel) or only average/good players (Benny/Kuyt/Pennant).

Up front, Fernando, but then again fairly average/good...not even potential.

I don't want to be on a downer, but I think we're in for a tougher time next season than this. I can see us being further behind, not closer.

We're way behind at the moment and only significant investment is going to bridge the gap.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

I disagree, I think our spine is clearly comparable to any other side in Europe, it's the arms and legs where we are seriously lacking

What about the armpits and feet?

Seriously, do you think we have the back four to compare?

I think our priority needs to be fullbacks and attacking wide players.

Agger, Skertle, Carragher with Hyppia as back up is top class imo.

I believe we have real depth there, more options than other sides even, but on the flanks we fall short.

In the periods when we had most of our squad fit last year we were the best team in the league. It was the period in the middle when we were suffering heavy injuries to key players that let our season down.

and there is another problem when we loose key players we have no-one capable of repaceing them, its were arsenal failed this season,we dont have quality in depth like the manks and arsenal, but the blame cant be put down to injuries cause we have been equally as poor wiith a full strengh team...

raffa up until the barnsley humileation was still rotateing to the max and after that when we went on that run were we only lost to the manks he didnt, alot of missed chances in the early part of the season cost us aswell and that was when he had a fit squad but the rotateing killed us

I think we have an excellent spine to the team - top quality players with there best days ahead of them (barring perhaps Carragher) - Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Carragher, Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Lucas, Gerrard, Torres - all central, all with bags of footballing talent.

These guys are assisted by the guys that (I believe) are still championing winning squad members - Hyypia, Arbeloa, Kuyt, Babel, and perhaps Bennanoon.

We just need a bit more quality in the wide areas and we should push the other 3 teams much harder next year.

Width is where we are weak. Hopefully, Degen and Dosenna will fill that gap.
