OK, so let me get this thread straight. The point is that Rafa spent £40m more than he's got in, (and that's bad) in the last 12 months?

Hmmmm. We didn't really get rid of anyone who was a major success, even lil luis wasn't going to win us a league title. Most of them had to go.

In fact, I'd take a straight swap for those 6 above and the 7 below.

Benayoun, Babel, Lucas, Leto, Insua, Itandje, Skrtel

Which leaves your £41.7m spend... and Mascherano and Torres. 2 players who're probably worth half as much again already, are undeniably world class, and have improved our squad no end.

So basically, yay for Rafa then is the only logical conclusion?

Are we paupers? Rafa has spent double NET on a per year basis to that of Houllier. FACT.

We're paupers because in order to finance his spending, we took out credit notes to the tune of £30M-odd to pay for Torres & Babel.

We then refinanced that debt as part of the £350M package. But didn't pay back the credit notes, according to the Times. So we effectively borrowed the Torres & Babel money twice, despite all the CL money that came in from our run to the final in Athens, plus all the players sales last summer, plus the bumper new TV deal which should have meant we had lots to spend.

And spent another £25M of borrowed money on Skrtel & Mascherano, out of the £40-odd of the refinancing deal that was set aside as "working capital".

And now, because no bank with a grain of sense will lend Hicks a penny, we have whatever remains from that £40M as out budget, if we're lucky, plus any sales.

I don't think Rafa cares whether the money comes from the coffers or from the banks.
Michael good post mate and I agree about the improvement. I just keep hearing that we "can't compete", "we don't spend money" - which is horse ****. As you say Michael £41m net over 1 year is huge money and more than United, Chelsea and Arsenal spend this past year.
