    Rafa and Mascherano

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has hailed his backroom team for convincing him to sign Javier Mascherano last year.

He told liverpoolfc.tv: "Again I mention our scout department, because when he was at West Ham everyone was saying 'forget it' because he was struggling in the Premier League. We had confidence because we knew him even when he was in the reserves at River Plate.

"I tried to sign him for Valencia when he first played for the national team. I knew he was a good player and the scout department were also pushing me. The key was whether he could do well in England, but his character is really good. He's very competitive and he's showed now he is a really good player."

In the current market, £17m is a steal. He is only 23 and probably the best midfielder in that position in the world.

I think it was £61.65 million wasn't it?

before he went to west ham he was being touted at 25mill,when west ham signed both tevez and mascha it was reported that they hadd just gotten 2 players for free that were worth 50 mill on the open market, even if tevez at the time was valued at 30 mill(not sure he was) that still makes him worth around 20 mill and i dont rate tevez as a 30 mill player.....

you cant tell me that you think 17mill wasnt a bargin for mascha, just think if we were to have signed him as a regular player how much he would of gone for, think how much he would go for if we were to sell him tomorow....

mascha was a bargin at 17 mill lookin at how good he has become for the team....

No probably about it. As a pure holding midfielder there is no comparison. AND Rafa has been developing his offensive game. His passing has improved no end this year, he is getting forward far more often and he scored his first goal @ club level

You guys maybe going homo on torres, but I'm going homo on El Jefecito. We're all set for 10 years

The real key about El Jefecito is not just just how good he is. It's also about how good he allows other players to be. Based on his game a CH and his CM partner can pretty much get forward whenever they want because he can cover them. That's almost as good as having an extra player on the pitch.

How much would you pay to have 12 players? That's how much El Jefecito is worth.

West Ham couldn't afford to let him play any more as they were tied in to a deal whereby had he played a certain amount of games, he would have cost them many millions more. Apparently.

would never go homo over a player but i belive mascha has had the same impact in the team as torres, just torres get the headlines with his goals, mascha has brought a balance to the midfield not seen since hamman left and like you said he is improveing as a player this season and that only benifits us

Even so, when he did play they couldn't get anything out of him. Both Curbishley and Pardew couldn't use what was obviously world class talent. Says a lot about English managers, sorry

Id be more gutted if we sold Mascherano above any other player, including Gerrard and Torres.
