my favourite Red of all time, alongside the King. Just a sheer force of nature, brilliant player, he would go for easily 30mill in todays transfer fees maybe and quite easily more.

Incredible player, with a technique out of this world !
Shame he didn't have a lean physique (whilst it did help him as he bulldozed past many a defender). His conversion to central midfield when Roy Evans took over was a masterstroke ! He was magnificent in this role and our passing was down to his magnificent use of the ball out of defense. Even if we were ****e at defending at the time, teams didn't seem to take the ball off us !

Only 7 players in history have gone for over £30million.
The players nickname for his was 'Digger', after Digger Barnes - a character in Dallas. When i first heard the players calling him that during a game I misheard it and was so ashamed that I nearly tore my season ticket up. It was a good job my hearing got better!!
A very old mate of mine who is a Watford fan who used to watch Barnes at Vic Rd says he got the name digger because his middle name is Charles= JCB, hence they called him Digger
I think there was talk that his agent had been sending videos of him to Italian clubs, and as stated before it did seem like Liverpool wasn't his first choice
I was at Arsenal for his full debiut, and had a few misgivings about us signing him, his first touch and his movement though was fantastic. I never rave over a player after one performance but i did that night to anyone who would listen.
A short while after that his performances against Derby and i think QPR were some of the greatest performances i have sen by a player at Anfield

I'm struggling to recall Derby but I remember the QPR game, with a shaggy-haired Dave Seaman in goal for them. Of course he scored that goal that day...
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
Derby was a night game, if I remember. He ran riot up the wing anyway.
I remember just laughing and thinking oh my goodness this boy can play. I mean we knew he was a good player, but not that good. He tore their defence apart with the type of skill you love to see.
