    Steven Gerrard the Team player

    Sky Sports

Steven Gerrard believes any player unwilling to accept Fabio Capello's new regime will be ousted from the squad.

The Italian is renowned for his no-nonsense approach to management and is unlikely to tolerate players who fail to buy into his ideas.

England have been far from impressive in his opening three matches and Capello will be aware that the Three Lions supporters are not noted for their patience.

Gerrard, who has been forced to adopt a wide left position under the new coach, expects the former Milan and Real Madrid man to be a success given time, just as long as he gets his own way.

"Every single player has got things to prove personally and also as a team," said the Liverpool skipper.

"We have under-achieved. All the staff are scrutinising us and looking at our strengths and weaknesses.

"Every time we train and every time there is an opportunity to meet up and play these games, you've got come to try and impress to stay involved.

"I am sure this manager will be ruthless if you don't meet the standards he wants. It is as simple as that.

"Training has been intense and, if you don't play the way Mr Capello wants you to play, or buy into his system, then I think it's 'goodbye' for you.

"The lads are learning how the manager wants us to play and how he wants the team set-up and he is also telling people individually what he expects from them."

Gerrard admits that he would prefer to adopt a similar role for his country as he does for his club, but is prepared to adapt his game to meet the demands of the system.

"That is not a concern," he said.

"It is something I am quite used to at club level. I feel as if I am mature enough and experienced enough to adapt to different roles.

"You know my favourite role. I don't have to go on record and say it again.

"But, as long as I am in that starting XI and part of this England team, because I believe we will improve to get to where we want to get, I don't mind where I play.

"I think football has changed. In this day and age you can't afford to be selfish and think about yourself and spit your dummy out of the pram if you are not in your favourite position.

"You have got to adapt and be a team player and that's what I think I am. I have mentally accepted that - about six years ago."

Good to hear those comments from Stevie. Should finally shut a few people up who love to moan about him because of something or another

He seems to be maturing which can only be a good thing for us. I think working with Capello is going to be a good thing for us. It'll show SG that the approach Rafa has taken is similar to what the best managers in the world follow (i.e. Capello). Expect a more malleable SG in the future.

Yeah i agree that him working with a coach like Capello will only improve him.

The only thing is that i hope he doesnt get the England Captaincy. I have always thought that doing that job is a burden and it would negatively effect his Liverpool Career. So i hope he can continue to focus on Liverpool and not so much on England

England might start winning things if the manager is capable of making his decisions based on his years of experience at different levels rather than in response to a few overexcited QPR fans and a Bluto lookalike and his mates.

england have lacked for years a manager to stand up and tell all the so called superstars were they are playing and like it or lump it,cappello has balls to do it...

but it would be nice to see gerrard used were he is best suited not were is free to fit him in or were they are lacking and expect miricles from gerrard
