    Ryan Babel update

RYAN BABEL is facing a race against time to be fit for the start of Liverpool’s pre-season programme.

The 21-year-old Dutchman will embark on a period of rest to allow his torn ankle ligaments to heal before returning to Melwood when pre-season training resumes in a month’s time.

Babel has been ruled out of Euro 2008 after sustaining the injury training with the Dutch squad and could be laid low for up to seven weeks.

It would leave him lacking sufficient fitness for the start of Liverpool’s friendly fixtures and leave him playing catch-up ahead of the new domestic campaign.

“He needs five to seven weeks to recover,” said Holland coach Marco van Basten. “He was on the other end of the field when he turned around. He told me that he heard something snap, and others heard it too.

“He went to a hospital and there it became clear he had torn a muscle.”

          Yep.

Holland want to take Ryan Babel to the Olympics in August providing he has recovered from an ankle injury which has ruled him out of Euro 2008.
It is feared the Liverpool winger will be out for seven weeks after tearing ligaments in training ahead of Holland's friendly with Wales on Saturday.

This diagnosis means he could be back in time for the Olympics, which take place from August 8 to 24.

If picked, it would leave Reds boss Rafa Benitez with a selection headache heading into the 2008-09 campaign, with Lucas, Sebastian Leto and possibly Javier Mascherano also set to feature in Beijing.

The quartet could not only miss Liverpool's pre-season, but also the opening games of the new Premier League season, which starts on August 16.

"If Ryan is fit, he will be at the top of our list for the competition," said Dutch Olympic coach Ari Haan.

"With his qualities, Ryan is a vital player for our plans."

Rafa's not going to be a happy chappy.
"My commitment to Liverpool is 100 per cent. I would die for that Liverpool shirt. I think the club loves me and I feel the same, no matter what the situation." - Pepe Reina, Nov '09.

Liverpool's next confirmed match is not until 30th July against Villarreal and, if Van Basten's assessment is correct, Babel should be available for selection.

this injury can take a while to get fully going again though. I did something similar late last year, it was a good 2 mths before i had any confidence in my ankle

Not if he's named in the squad for the Olympics which starts in early August.

He'll get better just in time to get injured again at the Olympics knowing our luck. What a joke.

Aye, we need to start signing players with no pedigree, ones who won't get picked for their national sides, thus reducing the risks of injury outside of the LFC environment. A much safer option i reckon.

..or we could just do a Scum & pretend they're all injured.
