KUYT: IT'S WONDERFUL PLAYING FOR REDS FANS
Paul Rogers 25 September 2006
Dirk Kuyt might have only been a Liverpool player for a matter of weeks but that's hasn't stopped the Dutch international from forging an instant rapport with the club's supporters.
The former Feyenoord striker made it two goals from two games with a stunning strike past Paul Robinson during the 3-nil defeat of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and if his post-match celebrations in front of the Kop was anything to go by, it won't be long before he's challenging Robbie Fowler and Steven Gerrard for the title of most popular player at the club.
Having been the last to leave the pitch on Wednesday night after the victory over Newcastle, Kuyt was again the last down the tunnel on Saturday after taking his time to applaud all four corners of the ground. It's a ritual the new Liverpool No.18 claims we should get used to.
"I always go to the fans at the end of the game," explains Kuyt, "at least I do when I score! I see it as respect for the supporters, as a way of thanking them for the incredible backing they give us. It was something I used to do at Utrecht and Feyenoord, because I like to thank them. I do it after every game if I score goals.
"It's wonderful to play in front of supporters like these. They seem to respect me already and I wanted to show the same for them at the end. Everyone has been really good since I arrived, trying to help as I settled in and it's important to show respect back to supporters.
"It has been a good week for the team and me, but I know I have to play better still. It's getting better but I think there is another 10 or 20 per cent to come. I have to pass better and link with the players around me because I can create as well as score. I have to get used to more things here but the players have helped me so much to settle in."
At least 10 or 20% more to come. **** me, hes gonna be some player
