Gerrard talks up Nemeth and Spearing.

We've asked five men in the know for a player to watch for 2008-09, with their selections featuring on Liverpoolfc.tv all this week. Today, club captain Steven Gerrard becomes the latest onlooker to wax lyrical about Krisztian Nemeth.

Player profile: Hungarian prodigy Krisztian Nemeth is the most talked about player in Liverpool's reserve ranks.

The 19-year-old striker arrived from MTK Hungaria alongside compatriot Andras Simon in the summer of 2007 having impressed in the previous year's UEFA Under-17 Championships.

After signing a three-year deal, he quickly set about finding the back of the net, bagging a brace on his second-string debut against Man City.

If this had Kopites purring, a double in the mini-derby a week later really got the terraces buzzing.

Nemeth went on to score his 9th of the league campaign as the reserves clinched the national title at Anfield against Aston Villa in May 2008.

Later that month, after netting the crucial goal against Portugal to take Hungary U19s to the European Championships, he received his first senior international call up.

With lethal finishing, great movement and a fine touch, big things are expected of Nemeth, who has yet to make his first-team bow for Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard says: "Krisztian looks really lively and sharp up front, and he's scoring all the goals for the reserves.

"It's difficult to put a time on when he's going to get into the first team because he's still young, he's still learning. But he's got a lot of ability and a bright future.

"I'm sure Rafa will have an idea of when he's going to be ready but he's already joined in with the first team in training and he's always held his own.

"There are quite a few players I could have chosen. Jay Spearing is a fantastic player. He's only a small guy but ability-wise he's certainly got it in abundance."

I would much rather see Nemeth given a call up to the first team than waste money on signing dross like Vornonin or another unknown striker who will do **** all for us.

Hopefully he will get a promotion this season, working with Torres is only going to improve him.

Very excited to see a few of these youngsters break through, might even shut the media up about Arsenal "youth" policy. Actually theres no chance of that happening is there?

I'm one of those people who supports anyone in a Liverpool jersey but I'd much rather we spent our resources on Nemeth than Voronin.
Potential great vs. A waste of space

Do you think Spearing would have got a mention if he was not a scouser?

true, only one way to tell if Nemeth will become a potential great and that is by playing him.

About time some of the youngsters get a chance. Its about time we found a long overdue replacement for Fowler. I know some will say Torres but i am talking about a player that comes through our ranks. It is sad to see that younger players are not geting the chance they want did. also the days of players being bought from teams like brighton ect are over which is sad.

Spearing has been consistently one of the best reserve players since he started playing reserves. Injuries and the form of Plessis were the reason he was not raved about as much in the second half of the year.

The thing is it is clear he will need games next year but where is a different question. It would be a big pressure to put him straight into the first team and coming off the bench is only likely to get him a limited number of games - so should we loan him out? IIRC Ablett said he was only getting better at English and so a loan might be counter productive.

I would say though that Rafa has had a decent eye for when young players are ready for the PL (in terms of when he has played Plessis and Insua and in terms of the young players he has bought in such as Agger, Sissoko and Skrtel). The problem is how do you progress players from talented reserves to that position. Even Arsenal have in recent years found this harder and no longer play full reserve teams in the Carling Cup.

You are right mate, games are the only way he will improve. I do think he should stay here with us and, along with Plessis, insua and san jose etc be given more opportunities to train with the first, maybe be in the match day squad and start being given odd starts and sub apperances. Lets give them some exposure during the CL qualifiers along with the Carling Cup. the more experience they have the more comfortable they will be in the first team spotlight and hopefully will mature into top class players. Otherwise what is the point of a youth team?

Is it this season they're bringing in the rule of 2 extra youngsters on the bench for Premiership games?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
