    Formation Next Season

In your opinion what formation do you think Benitez will usual primarily next season?

As we know Benitez will chop and change players and formations depending on the opposition and who he has available. However he does usually favour one formation each season over others. In his first season domestically we usually had two upfront with Ciise and Baros, where as in Europe he mainly used Baros as a lone striker with Gerrard in a free role behind.

The season after Crouch was bought and was used alongside Morientes and 4-4-2 was the approach we took.

Two years ago it was 4-4-2 with Bellamy, Kuyt and Crouch rotating for the striking positions. Kuyt was usually playing slightly deeper as Benitez would say ‘between the lines’, but it was 4-4-2 really.

This season we started with 4-4-2 but then it changed half way through the season with Gerrard roaming in a free role behind Torres.

Now Benitez used Babel on the left last season because he said we needed him to play that role and it should help his development. But he has hinted that his future might be more upfront centrally. This would lead you to think that two strikers could be used upfront next season, with Gerrard used more in centre midfield or on the right.

Now we have three central defenders competing for a starting place with Hyypia also another able squad player. Possibly Benitez will go with three at the back from time to time with Degen and Dossena wingbacks, Barry and Mascherano holding in central midfield, Gerrard in a free role roaming behind Babel and Torres.

Then again with Gerrard and Torres looking so good together upfront last season possibly Benitez will leave them to it and keep the 4-2-3-1 formation.

What do you think will be mainly used? What would you prefer to see?

I think he will flit between 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 as last season.

4-4-2 for the games against lesser sides, with Crouch/Kuyt/another plus Torres as the 2 and leave one of the 2 defensive midfielders on the bench as we don't need them against Fulham for example. 2 wide men i.e. Babel and presumably a new signing.

4-2-3-1 for Europe and against better sides domestically.

I prefer the 4-2-3-1 but we need to buy players who suit it better i.e. the 2 either side of Gerrard. Babel on the left, but someone better than Kuyt on the right, and some cover.

Don't disagree with much of that.

I think we can afford to be more adventurous against the poorer teams, certainly at Anfield... This means Gerrard in the centre of a 4-4-2.

I'm not sure about Babel on the left. I think he'd be more effective centrally, as most of his goals came when he came off the bench upfront or was in the centre of the field. On the left he looks predictable, to cut inside and shoot and it doesn't really work as defenders know what he's going to do.

I'd like to see him have a run upfront with Torres, but then again we don't really have anyone else who can play on the left.

I'm not sure where this obssession of playing Babel on the left comes from - he's RIGHT-footed FFS. I'd much prefer to see him on the right where he can use his pace and skill with his right peg to get past people. It's not as if we have a great right-sided specialist midfielder there who we cant move / drop.

If we only buy another 2 palyes on top of Degen and Dossena this summer I'd much prefer was a left-footed winger / wideman and another proven goalscoring striker.

hmm, I do like the idea of a 3-5-2 perhaps with Dossena/Aurelio and Degen/Arbeloa we may have the palyers who are ideally suited to that formation. Would allow a trio of Xabi (barry?) Stevie and Mascher to rule the centre and we could go with 2 up front.

            Agreed.

We do have a great right sided player his name is Gerrard. But he doesn't want tot play that role, it seems.

He is our best right sided player, but wasted out there really on 'the graveyard shift'.

Babel can play left or right in a front 3, or left r right in a 4-4-2, I only put him left for now because we don't have anyone else (yet). He is also an option as one of the front 2 in a 4-4-2, but when he has played up there for the odd 20 mins or so he has never looked comfortable to me.

I think we need to see who we sign this summer before we can even start to think about formations for next season

I think we'll be looking to stick with the 4-2-3-1 we played in the 2nd half of the season. I think we'll have 2 new fullbacks, Barry/Xabi with Mascherano in the middle, and Babel and Gerrard + an other as the 3 behind Torres
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

He's our best right back as well, but you wouldn't play him there either.
