REDS SUFFER MASTERS HEARTACHE
Liverpool's hopes of claiming their seventh regional title are over after they slumped to a 4-2 defeat against Tranmere in the Merseyside Masters final.
The Reds had gone into the clash with Rovers with a 100 per cent record after winning all three of their group matches, but they were stunned in the first minute when Stuart Barlow capitalised on a defensive mistake to put the underdogs in front.
Liverpool had made a habit of coming from behind to win earlier in the evening and goals from Phil Babb and Paul Walsh put them in the driving seat.
But a youthful Tranmere side were always dangerous on the break and they fought back to lead 3-2 at the interval with efforts from John McGreal and Eddie Bishop.
Ian Rush's men stepped up their game in the second period but Bishop's second of the game killed off any chance of a revival and Rovers held on to claim a famous victory.
