We made money on Gonzales and Nunez according to a lot of reports. The fact is we don't really know how much any transfers bring in or cost in reality. Adding a player we haven't actually sold doesn't really add anything to your argument either.

I think Rafa has done reasonably well in terms of getting decent prices for players and has certainly added value to the team overall with his purchases.

selective memory amigo? infact gonzales after all that hype was awful and morientes imo should have been given another season (seeing as though the chav is!)

Plus Morientes is Moro so was already covered.

I don't see that there's any grounds to question Rafa's ability to get decent money in for players he sells. In general we've done very well in that respect since Rafa arrived IMO.

i didn't question rafa's ability here rather that there were one or two other signings he made that we lost money on. I whole heartedly agree that he is worlds apart from houllier but RCDNW is incorrect.

still would have like morientes to have been given another season

That's the crux of the matter for me, 10/11mill for a player with one year left & who is refusing to sign is very good business.

I'd say he has done much better than that, especially when you consider that leaving LFC is usually a step down to a smaller team with a smaller budget!

Given those that have come and gone, transfers are now revenue for us. That has never been the case before. It's amazing. Add on the prize money Rafa has generated as well it's an astonishing record.

I'm pretty sure that without the kind of financial record that Rafa has that we would have been able to afford Torres.

I agree with you. There was an interesting article in the Echo a few months ago that showed Rafa's net spend in the time he's been at the club has barely exceeded the CL prize money the club has earnt in that time, so in a way, Rafa has only spent money he and his team have generated through their success on the field. Astonishing really, and if you look at how he is scrambling to sell before making any big purchases it is clear that his spending money this window will barely be above what the club earnt in CL revenue (say £20m) plus sales.

                      Crouch passes Portsmouth medical

Crouch is entering the final year of his contract at Anfield
Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has completed a medical at Portsmouth and is expected to finalise his £11m move to Fratton Park on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old, who will link up with Pompey again six years after leaving, was praised for his contribution by Reds boss Rafael Benitez.

"He is a good professional and we would have wanted him to stay," he said.

"We offered him a new contract. But sometimes you have to understand the player. He wanted to play a lot more."

The Spaniard added: "With Fernando Torres now first choice, that [playing more] was always going to be difficult.

"I can understand Peter's situation. But he did very well for this club and we always supported him when people doubted the decision to bring him to Anfield."

Crouch will team up with Jermain Defoe in a new-look Portsmouth attack next season.

Liverpool are expected to initially receive in the region of £9m for Crouch, who joined the club from Southampton in July 2005 but only started nine Premier League games last term.

Benitez initially said he would consider offers for Crouch in the region of £15m but has been forced to scale back his demands for a player with only a year left on his current contract.

                      606: DEBATE
                      How much is Crouch worth?

Crouch has scored 40 goals in 135 appearances for Liverpool but has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place in recent times.

He was relegated behind Torres, who scored 33 goals for the Reds after signing from Atletico Madrid last summer.

However, he was a popular figure with Liverpool fans and still managed to net 11 goals as he was mainly used as a substitute by Benitez.

Crouch started his career as a trainee at Tottenham before moves to QPR, Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Norwich - where he had a spell on loan - Southampton and Liverpool.

I think £11m plus add-ons is a really good deal for a player with less than a year on his contract, plus it represents a profit of £4m on a player many said Rafa was crazy to sign for £7m only 3 years ago.

As well as Crouch has done for us over the last two years 42 goals in 135 appearances is hardly prolific (although I concede a lot of those will have been sub appearances from the last season where he only played 10 mins). Having said that Pompey are getting a good, technically proficient player who if you play to his strengths will excel.

The player was always skilful, but doing well for Liverpool and then England has given the lad credibility. This is a good deal for all concerned as sadly there is no place for him in our current set-up. In the system we play he'd be a bit lost IMO.

His armband proved he was a RED. Torres, Torres.
