As for that policy it seem to be very much favored by Rafa and his staff. I personally tend to agree with you, but who am I to say I know better then the staff at Liverpool FC.
I think the sticking point, as you rightly pointed out, is quality mate. And I just think we're slowly getting there. Our young lads have been part of a very successful reserve side + we have stiffened up the under 16 and 17 sides with very talented players during the last couple of years.

I'm certain that will be the policy Rafa will be pushing through in the next couple of years, if he's given the time to do it.

By including (and promoting) one or two young players (by merit) to the first team squad, instead of buying players for bucket load of money, is much more beneficial to them.

Well, we need to have the quality though, and it seems we're getting there with the signings Rafa made during the last year.
Rafa observes these players in training with the first team. And if they where pulling up trees there they would already be in the first team.
A good example is Plessis. He was to old to go to USA with the reserves so he staid home. During that time he impressed Rafa so he picked him for the Arsenal game, but that was just on his performance in training while the reserves where abroad.

I think the thing is that at that age you make the most progress by playing competitive games. And Rafa is clearly of the opinion that the reserve games and a few Carling Cup games is just not as good for them as going out on loan. He has made many comments on the lack of games for the reserves.

The ideal solution for me would be to allow the reserve teams to play in the lower leagues.

Well, Crouch will be replaced but I can see Nemeth forcing his way up and take Voronin's place in the squad if he really progresses the way he's been doing lately.

People are talking about Villa etc, but we have a player with fantastic potential in the squad already and he may save us in forking out huge sums of money in the next couple of years.
12 months ago Rafa said the reserves were 2 years away from the first team, so based on that you would figure that Nemeth has another year of development before Rafa seriously considers him for the first team.

Keep the experienced squad player (the crow) and loan out the inexperienced, promising youngster (Nemeth) to see how he handles the step up.

If it works out, sell the crow and bring Nemeth in. If it doesn't, no harm done

Rafa has wanted this since day one. Its the set up in Spain. Not sure if there is restriction on how far they can be promoted. Reserves end up in the premiership as well!

Yes, there is a restriction: they can't play in the same division and therefore have to stay below them. I think I'm right in saying that even if they are one division apart and the A team is relegated and the B team wins promotion (so they would pass each other) then the B team is also relegated.
                .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Has there been a break through player from the reserves' under Rafa?

                    Warnock? Anyone?

Depends what you mean by 'break through'?

                        Plessis? Insua?

                          nemeth

I agree with most of the opinions on this one. Sending good promising youngsters out on loan is not entirly the answer for their progression the oldest quote in the book "if they are good enough they are old enough" look at Owen debut at 16/17 , Also in my opinion they are not always on the fast train to the first team if they spend a season on loan look at guthrie promising at one point a season at bolton and he is being linked to a permanant move away from anfield , I would stick to the policy that Arsenal have and that is to use the carling cup and the reserve league as their progression , In any standard of football as soon as that whistle goes everyone who loves the game plays at the most competative level that their ability allows whether its the FA cup final or a sunday league Derby match , You sweat, fight and work your breeze blocks off for the same result, So sending Nemeth out on loan to Leeds would not do him any favours proberbly our reserves are a better team than Leeds anyway and staying at Anfield would catch Rafa's eye more often than watching Leeds on youtube.

I know Hamill didnt do much last season but the season before he was one of the best players at the Scottish Club he went to and reached the Cup Final with them. We also had Carson who made his name by going out on loan for Carlton.
I think its important to pick the right club and manager when sending them out on loan. Hopefully McAllister will give Nemeth a right few games, and if he did then it would be a lot better than him staying in the reserves. Will agree if they arent played then they would be better at Anfield.

At least 10 prem games, even if its from the bench. I would dis-regard all carling cup apperances.

None yet, but given that he has been buying 16 & 17 year olds, that is not a great suprise.
