REDS AGREE FEE FOR GUTHRIE MOVE

    Steve Hunter 11 July 2008

Liverpool have agreed a fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Danny Guthrie to the North East.

The former Academy player, who spent last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers, will now discuss personal terms with Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan before finalising the deal.

Liverpool FC Head of Press Ian Cotton said: "We have agreed a transfer fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Danny Guthrie.

"We have now given Newcastle permission to speak directly with the player."

the more i look at it the more i think bentley would suit, especially if villa are in for him for 10 million. swap pennant plus 5 or 6 million?

would be a very impressive premiership lineup, would easily hit the ground running. it would still leave us a striker short imo but that can be sorted in January or next summer. in the meantime babel will only get better and nemeth may come through yet.

I would have like to have seen Gutherie given a chance, especially as Lucas and Mascherano are off to the Olympics, why 'waste' £18m on Barry when there is the newer upcoming version already at the club? save the Barry money and but a true world class star or not scrimp on the fullback positions.
          We come not to play.

I've been saying this all summer. I think he has the potential to be a top player in the right team with the right guidance. Mark Hughes turned him from Arsenal reject into England international and I think under Rafa's tutelage the sky's the limit for this lad. However I think I read somewhere that he wants to move back to London and Spurs are trying to sign him so I reckon if we signed him we would miss out on Keano.

The thing is though Barry has proved to be a top class player over the last few seasons with Villa and England. Guthrie did well for himself in a poor Bolton team and although he didn't look out of place, he didn't set the world alight there either.

The two players are worlds apart in terms of the level they are/ have been playing at and Guthrie hasn't done enough yet to suggest he'll ever reach the level Barry is at.

What was Barry doing at Gutheries age? at the same age i would argue they were at similar levels, Gutherie would learn no end by playing with Gerrard, Mascherano, Torres etc and that would accelerate his learning and make him a better player, I suppose it's the risk factor - Is Rafa willing to risk an untested but promising local player or go buy the ready made item.

Rafa can't win then can he? One minute everyone is saying we need players ready for the first team NOW! And then the moment we try and sign one someone else pipes up saying we should be giving one of the kids a chance instead.

Guthrie may well go on to reach Barry's level, but the point is Rafa doesn't have time to wait and find out. For what it's worth I dont think he's anything better than decent anyway and think Newcastle isnt the best place for him to shine sadly, many a promising career has failed there in recent years.

He had cemented a place in a good Aston Villa team that regularly made it into the top 6 and got 6 England caps before he reached the age Guthrie is now. There's no way it could be said they were at similar levels mate.

I'm not saying Guthrie is ****e but I really don't see what he's done to make you think he can equal what Barry would bring to the team. They're miles apart IMO.

See for me I don't think we need Barry, is he what we missed last season in games we lost or could have won? and the answer for me is no. For this reason i would prefer the likes of Gutherie or Plesis to be given a chance and the remaining money to be spent in areas such as QUALITY fullbacks/the Kuyt position/backup striker.

Such negative posting from the Imster. All those sleepless nights looking after the nipper catching up with you mate?

I think Barry (which is more or less a straight swap for Xabi) will be a great signing bringing mobility and forward runs from deep and personally I think he will add a new dimension to our play.

I hope so as it looks nailed on that we will sign him.

Gutherie will have Barton as his mentor at Newcastle

At least Guthrie will know by the end of the season how to make a pouch of baccy go that little bit further.

So how much do we think for Guthrie??
He's around 21 and played a full season in the Prem and UEFA Cup last season so anything over or around 4-5mill would be good imo.
Chuck in some add ons as he's young and maybe a sell on clause and it's another piece of great business by Rafa.
Just think how many other youngsters will be sold off over the next few years after being loaned out to see if they're up to it.
It'll bring priceless revenue in that could make all the difference, obviously if they go off and rip it up then we bring them back and play them
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.
