It all depends on the quality of the player and the difference he will make to our team, now, forgive me if I'm wrong, but most Liverpool fans view that I've heard are saying they think it isn't worth paying an extra couple of million for a player like Barry because he isn't going to make that much difference to us winning the title. He ain't any better than Alonso in most people eyes and he isn't in a position we need strengthening.

Where as a quality winger or another top quality striker either to support Torres or play a big part, would be worth paying slightly more than we probably should.

Its about calculated risks and also needs of the team and I don't think we need Barry that badly that we should be held to paying £18m for him.

If you all think he is worth £18m and even if he isn't worth £18m we should pay that anyway regardless of the real needs of the team then you need to start thinking about the real world and what implications spending that extra money has and the restrictions it puts on other spending.

Unable to pay it more like Shaggy.

In the current climate I really struggle to see how we are expected to keep a pace with Man U and Chelsea. Arsenal achieved wonders last season but even their threadbare squad caught up with them in the end.

I've already made my views clear in my thread 'The Keep Xabi Alonso Thread' and I'm so pleased that we aren't going to pay a ridiculous price for a player who won't add much to our team.

The only way this transfer will happen is if we sell Alonso and if it does happen without selling Alonso then we are absolute mugs as we need to speand the money on other positions.

I think we are in the driving seat with this transfer now Barry has stated his intentions, it means they take our offer or lose millions by being over stubborn and over-valuing the player.
Yep I have to agree. Rafa's performance or the clubs performance since hes come in has been a real highlight for me. Barry is a top player sure, but 18 Million I feel is perhaps 1 or 2 million too much for him and Rafa is spot on to holding to his guns. The only thing about keeping Xabi is he is not a left midfield player which Barry obviously is, and very good cover for left back to boot.

I see why O Niell is holding out and you have to respect that, his club captain a full international and very strong in 3 positions, would be like us selling Stevie G, hes right to want to get as much as possible, But 18 Million cash upfront in this climate is madness

yup, that is quite right, we have been ****ed in the past when we've bought/sold at bad levels (thinking Pennant for 6/7mill and wanting 15 for Crouch but then relenting at 11mill, agreeing a 10mill fee with villa over carson but then that going tits up)

also i see simao and alves havebeen mentioned here, was it not the case that we'd agreed a fee with both clubs only for them to start playing silly buggers and wanting more. In that case I think the club were right to break of talks as it would give every club carte blanche to take the piss with us.

Agreed. As for O'Neill saying that Arsenal are in the race now just to get us to pay the £18M.

Why didn't Rafa offer Carson and cash if he is desperate to get rid of him an AV wanted him?

Villa and Barry, two entirely different players and propositions, you can't really compare.
