a bit of big tournament experience might do him some good as well.

Messi Can Miss Olympics, Says Rogge
International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge says Barcelona won't be forced into releasing Lionel Messi to play the Olympic Games.
The Catalan club have been adamant over their wish to not allow Lionel Messi to play the Olympic Games so that they can use him in the Champions League third qualifying round.
Barcelona believe they can't be forced to let the player go as the olympic tournament is not included in FIFA's official calendar.
And Rogge has now apparently agreed with Barça on this case, saying: "A letter was sent to every club affected by the ceding of players to the Olympic Games in which we inform they have to allow their under-23 players to go.Otherwise, those footballers won't be allowed to play for their teams while the olympic tournament of Beijing is taking place.
"Nevertheless, we will make an exception for the clubs that have to play the Champions League qualifying rounds and are against letting players leave, as to prevent them from getting injured."
A final decision on this case will be announced by Sunday as Messi will reportedly join the rest of the Argentina squad on Monday.

Expect Messi to respect the club who nurtured him and brought him and his family to Barcelona and set them up. The competition is not even on the FIFA calender. Mascherano was sitting in West Ham's reserves when Rafa rescued him. He owes him a massive debt in my opinion.Originally posted by vlahka View PostExpect Messi to hand in a transfer.
Rafa is the reason he is Argentina's No.1 holding midfielder again.
The Spanish boys will return heroes and other players will be envious of there Euro medals.
If one of our boys wins the Olympics, I would say very few players will give two ****s.Last edited by JPK; 20-07-08, 03:50 PM.Oh the man is a midfield maestro

Clearly Mascherano was crap before he came to Liverpool and Benitez made him what he is today. Same goes for Messi. No skill involved in the players themselves. Grow up. They owe you and the club **** all if the club wants to treat them like property.Originally posted by JPK View PostExpect Messi to respect the club who nurtured him and brought him and his family to Barcelona and set them up. Mascherano was touted as one of the World's best before he was given bad advice to join West Ham. Rafa put his trust in him and got his career back on track. I have no problem with a player going playing the Euro's or World cup qualifiers or African nations or Copa America, but an overage player going to the Olympics in a joke in my eyes.Originally posted by vlahka View PostClearly Mascherano was crap before he came to Liverpool and Benitez made him what he is today. Liverpool FC is the greatest football team in the world and everything else should come second for me. This year we have a real chance to win the league and Masch who is one of our most important players is heading off to a nothing tournament that he does not need to go to.
Personally I dont care for International football. Club all the way for me.
Just because my opinion differs to yours does not mean I should grow up

Thats the problem, you're seeing things as a Liverpool fan. Mascherano was not a Liverpool fan. Rafa didnt put his trust in Mascherano. The lad was awesome from the start. If we didnt get him someone else would of. We were extremely lucky to get his signature considering how alot of deals have gone lately.
I get what you're on about, but honestly you need to understand how players think. For ALOT of them its country first, club second. They love their country and will do their utmost to play for it. This sort of passion can NEVER be signed away. Football is pure passion.

The difference is we paid the fee to sign him and we pay his wages.Originally posted by vlahka View PostHe could get injured playing for us aswell. Only difference is if he gets injured away we can rant and rave and point fingers. But if he gets injured for us we just tuck out tails between our legs and try to stay quiet. Considering our crap injury list of last season, I'd be more confident of Babel staying fit overseas then staying fit with us.

Think about how often many of us have done something during a time when our own bosses at work told us NO you cant do this you are working, and how often we told them to go screw themselves. I know I did it when my boss refused to allow me to attend a friends funeral. Extreme example but you get the idea. Olympic games is a massive event. If I played for Liverpool and I had the chance to go to the olympics for 2 measly weeks, I'd totally go.
